Author Spotlight... Pernille Hughes

Thank you for visiting The Heart of Romance today Pernille, and congratulations on the success of your debut RomCom novel Sweatpants at Tiffanie’s.
And best wishes for your new novel
Probably the Best Kiss in the World
which releases today.

Pernille Hughes (pronounced Pernilla) studied Film & Literature at uni and took her first job in advertising, having been lured by the temptation of freebies, but left when Status Quo tickets was as good as it got.

After a brief spell marketing Natural History films, she switched to working in Children's television which for a time meant living in actual Teletubby and, sharing a photocopier with Laa-Laa.

Now, she lives in actual Buckinghamshire, sharing a photocopier with her husband and their four spawn. While the kids are at school she scoffs cake and writes RomCom stories in order to maintain a shred of sanity.

Previously, Pernille's writing has been printed in The Sunday Times as Confessions of a Tourist and in the fabulous SUNLOUNGER summer anthologies.

Here is a little bit about her current Book ~ Sweatpants at Tiffanie’s ~ which is Pernille's debut RomCom novel  (Harper Impulse)

Tiffanie Trent is not having a great week. Gavin, her boyfriend, has dumped her unceremoniously on their tenth anniversary, leaving her heartbroken and homeless.
Frank Black, the owner of Blackie’s boxing gym and where Tiff has been book-keeper for the last decade, has dropped dead. He's not having a great week either.
And if that wasn’t enough, Mike ‘The Assassin’ Fellner, boxer of international fame and Tiff’s first love, is back in town and more gorgeous than ever. Tiff can’t seem to go anywhere without bumping into his biceps.
When she discovers Blackie has left her the gym, Tiff, with her saggy trackies and supermarket trainers, is certain she’ll fail. Can Tiff step up and roll with the punches, or will she be down and out at the first round?

Pernille also kindly answered a few questions for us.

1 Where did the ideas for both your books come from?
Sweatpants At Tiffanie’s came from simply making a pun on the film title and stopping to wonder what that story would be about. A ‘fish out of water’ idea seemed to fit, especially as I am a reluctant exerciser myself. The new one, Probably the Best Kiss in the World, was inspired by several trips to Copenhagen, but particularly one with my husband where we navigated the city entirely by micro-breweries. It got me thinking about a woman who wants to be a Brewster.

2- What is your favourite book to read, and have you read it more than once?
I have a book by historical crime writer Lindsey Davis. It’s a stand-alone romance she wrote a long time ago called The Course of Honour and I just adore it, for no other reason than the characters existed and it depicts a love that spans decades and long absences.  My husband used to be away for a longer stint every year for work, and I always read it then. I know, I know, I am such a sap.

3- Chocolate or ice cream?
Chocolate, without doubt, especially truffles, the round ones with the hard chocolate shell and the soft middle,(not the cocao dusted ones) maybe a strawberry filling, or mocha, or the fresh cream chocolates from Leonidas, or a Jewel box from Prestat…mmmm… sorry, where were we…?
Ice cream is good too though…

4- If you were to write in another genre, what would it be?
Maybe funny crime? I love Janet Evanovitch’s writing.

5- Cut flowers or house plants?
Cut flowers are gorgeous but there is something sad about them dying. I’m going with a hydrangea in a pretty pot.

6- What do you do to relax?
A hot bath, a glass of prosecco or an Aperol Spritz, a book or a romcom film. I find being by the sea very relaxing too.

7- And finally, have you started working on your next novel and if so, please will you give us a hint about where your story it set?

Actually, I’m about to start from scratch as I’ve just shelved the story I was working on. Sometimes a story isn’t ready to be told, I suppose. So I’ll be ‘watching this space’ as much as anyone else!

Cindy Davis ~ On The Hook ~ Interview

Please welcome Cindy Davis who is best known for her murder mysteries and romantic suspense, many of which were set in her home state of New Hampshire. And have achieved considerable success. Now, a transplant to Florida, Cindy has found herself changing not only place of origin but also genre since her latest work is a New Age fiction penned with her husband Rick
She is an award winning freelance editor who's worked in both fiction and nonfiction with over a thousand authors.

Today Cindy is sharing an interview with Smith and Wesen, but first here is the blurb for On The Hook.

The multi-million dollar painting is there, then it's not. It's gone, but it can't be.

* Kendra Jean Valentine, underwriting agent for the policy, is on the hook. She scrapes together enough to hire two women to work the case. Two 'regular' women no self-respecting insurance agent would look twice at. Which is exactly why KJ thinks they're perfect.

* Westen Hughes owns a failing pet shop. With creditors phoning daily, she jumps at the chance to earn a bundle of easy money, even though the offer comes from high school nemesis KJ Valentine, who stole everything in high school:head cheerleader, homecoming queen and the star quarterback.

* Phoebe Smith is a snake-loving, underwear-hating, tuba player with more baggage than Logan Airport--Westen's total opposite in all ways.
Ten percent of a hundred million is...

Well, it's a lot so Smith and Westen join forces on a roller coaster ride to find one of the world's most valuable paintings.

Interview Smith and Westen

Interviewer: Tell me a bit about your childhood. How did it shape the adult you are now?
Westen: I had a normal childhood with parents who cared what I did. They kept me in line, taught me right from wrong, made sure I did my homework.
Smith: Same here.
Westen: Wait a second. You told me your parents let you run wild.
Smith: That showed my brother and I that they cared. We learned from our mistakes.

Interviewer: Tell us about your parents. And siblings, if you have any.
Westen: I am an only child. My parents were both elementary school teachers. They died within two years of each other when I was nineteen. I had moved out of the house by then but it still affected me a lot. We were very close.
Smith: My parents were both referees—Dad for the NFL, Mom for women’s basketball. They were gone pretty much all the time from October to April. Which gave me a solid disdain for all sports. I have a twin brother named Bellamy who was a pro basketball player until his retirement. Now he’s a coach for the Toronto Raptors. I try not to hold that against him.

Interviewer: Did you participate in extracurricular activities?
Westen: Not really. I was in the drama club. And I was head cheerleader.
Smith: Snorts loudly. You were valedictorian of your high school class. You were prom queen. And you dated the captain of the football team.
Westen: Those aren’t positions a person applies for. They are often thrust upon you. Remember what happened.
Smith: Oh yeah.
Interviewer: What happened?
Smith: KJ Valentine. ‘Nuff said?
Interviewer: Not really. Who is KJ Valentine?
Smith: Snarky laugh. More like what is she. She stole all those things from Westen.
Interviewer: You’re kidding.
Smith: Hell no. Tell her, Westen.
Westen: You just did. Why don’t you stick to the subject?
Smith: Offended. I thought that was the subject. Okay, okay, I played the tuba.
Westen: Snarky laughter of her own.

Interviewer: Tell us about your first boyfriend.
Westen: The aforementioned captain of the football team.
Smith: Stolen by the aforementioned KJ Valentine.
Westen: Clears her throat.
Smith: Jeez, okay it was a guy I met while working in a fast food shop.
Westen: Working there! You owned it.
Smith: Clears her throat. Just for a few years. Gave it to my brother when he fell on hard times.

Interviewer: What sort of job did you have before becoming insurance investigators?
Westen: I was a stay at home mom until my husband and son were killed in an auto accident. Then I inherited my husband’s business, Hughes Pets.
Smith: Breaks into hearty laughter.
Interviewer: Why is that funny?
Smith: She hates animals.
Westen: Unlike you who fawns over snakes. Big shiver shakes her entire body.
Smith. Okay, okay, I’ve owned a print shop, a sandwich shop, and a gift shop. She laughs again then sobers. I have a short attention span.
Interviewer: Does that mean you’ll walk out on your partnership with Westen pretty soon?
Smith: Only if she keeps making fun of my snakes. And my tuba playing.
Interviewer: Okay, last question…What was your most embarrassing moment?
Smith: Nothing embarrasses me.
Westen: Face turns red. I was in the middle of a cheering routine when my Kotex pad fell on the gym floor. The boys were practicing basketball at the time.
Smith: Shivers. Eeuw. You never told me that before.
Westen: And if you tell anyone, your body will never be found.

It's been a pleasure having you here today Cindy. Thanks for visiting The Heart of Romance.

Jenni Keer interviews her characters

I am delighted to welcome Jenni Keer, author of The Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker to The Heart of Romance today.

I asked Jenni if she would agree to let her heroine Lucy, and her hero George interview her...and Jenni has come up with some fascinating and unexpected answers :-)

Thank you Jenni for giving us an insight to your connection with your characters, developed and the changes they faced, and how writing The Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker became a three-way partnership.

Jenni Keer is a history graduate who embarked on a career in contract flooring before settling in the middle of the Suffolk countryside with her antique furniture restorer husband. She has valiantly attempted to master the ancient art of housework but with four teenage boys in the house it remains a mystery. Instead, she spends her time at the keyboard writing women’s fiction to combat the testosterone-fuelled atmosphere with her number one fan #Blindcat by her side. Much younger in her head than she is on paper, she adores any excuse for fancy-dress and is part of a disco formation dance team.

Thanks for inviting me on your blog Sherry. It’s wonderful to be here. I love your approach – asking me to interview Lucy and George from “The Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker”. It has produced some interesting answers and made me think. So without further ado, I shall interview them and see what they say...

Why did you want Jenni to write your story?
Lucy: I wanted my story to be told first and foremost because I needed to tell the world about Brenda, and for others to hear about our very special relationship. She is my elderly neighbour and my best friend. Our relationship is uncomplicated and she wants the best for me. More than with anyone else, I can be myself with her. Her calm and wisdom complement my vitality and youth. It’s a relationship that benefits us both. I am also proud of how I grew in confidence over the course of the story and, of course, fell in love. All things that make for an interesting tale.
George: I would add that Brenda was key to everything that happened to us. She even helped to change me – without her I’d still be a grumpy loner! We owe her a lot. I was pleased that Jenni wrote our story because she did so with humour – and a lot of funny things happened as I got to know Lucy. I think humour is important in life because if you can take a bad situation and laugh about it, it is much more manageable.

Did you get tough with your author?
Lucy: Of course! Because I am the total opposite to Jenni, it was hard for her to write some scenes and she had to think carefully about how I would react, and not how she would react. For example, I put up with a lot at my place of work. Jenni is a more confident person and would have high fived some of my colleagues – in the face – with a chair! Jenni also kept forgetting I liked tea because she doesn’t drink it very often – she’s more of a coffee girl. I think she found it tricky to remember how different we were. I also happen to know she doesn’t like it when bad things happen to good people so I had to remind her to ramp up the tension in the story.
George: I know she had to rewrite a lot of my dialogue to ensure my monosyllabic nature came across. As a wordy girl, she had to trim some of my sentences. I do speak more now. Lucy and Brenda helped me open up.

How hard was it to share your deepest secrets with Jenni?
Lucy: It was hard admitting my relationship with my mother. I love her but have always felt a poor second best to my sister, Emily. I had carried that with me for so long and it had a negative impact on my confidence and goals. The saddest thing is I think it was my mother’s own failure to achieve that meant she praised my sister and chided me. I guess she was living her dreams through Emily.
George: Without giving away spoilers, I was carrying around some baggage. It was hard to share this with Lucy, so even harder to share with Jenni. I think she did a good job tough, and perhaps it will help people to understand why I was so withdrawn to start with.

What character quirks are you pleased that Jenni wrote about?
Lucy: I love that she talked about my knitting. It’s unusual for someone my age
but knitting is growing in popularity with younger people again. I think it emphasises that I am different from a lot of my peers, but it also gave me a skill I was proud of. Have you seen my knitted Poldark! He’s become legendary.
George:  My allergies became more and more important as the story went on. It was a great touch because Scratbag, a local stray, just wouldn’t leave me alone, and I am the last person in the world who would go near a cat. But then cats are curious creatures. And very contrary…

Book blurb
Meet Lucy, aged 25, and Brenda, aged 79. Neighbours, and unlikely friends.
Lucy Baker is not your usual 25-year-old. She is more at home reading and knitting in her cluttered little flat than going out partying and socialising.
79-year-old Brenda is full of wise and wonderful advice, but when she’s diagnosed with dementia her life begins to change. Before her memories slip away for ever, Brenda is desperate to fulfil one last wish – to see Lucy happy.
Gifting Lucy the locket that helped Brenda find her own true love, she hopes to push her reticent neighbour in the right direction. But is Lucy Baker ready for the opportunities and heartbreaks of the real world? It’s about time she put her knitting needles aside and found out…
The Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker will be the most charming, heart-warming and feel-good novel you will read this year, perfect for fans of Ruth Hogan and Gail Honeyman.

Thank you for inviting me over to your blog, Sherry. I’ve enjoyed your take on the author interview.

You are very welcome Jenni, and thank you for sharing a fascinating insight into Lucy and George.

More Beginnings by Iris Blobel

~~ More Beginnings ~~ by Iris Blobel

♥♦♥ BLURB ♥♦♥

Zach Taylor, an escort in Sydney, living in Hobart, enlists the help of Natasha Peterson when his teenage friend, Mia, runs away. He soon finds out that the ‘dragon’ is really more of a kitten. And although Natasha, Mia’s teacher, is attracted to him as well, she has her own problems to deal with, not to mention her initial reaction to Zach’s occupation.

Will Zach’s job keep him from a chance to be with Natasha?

Life is good for teenager Mia Levesque. But when Darren Schuster shows up in Hobart, she knows something is up once Sophie and Mark cut their weekend away short and rush home in the middle of the night. When Sophie won’t answer Mia’s questions, emotions run high, and Zach confirms Darren’s identity to Mia. Disappointed, angry, and feeling alone, Mia runs away.

Will life settle back into a routine for Mia once she finds out about the stranger in her life?

New Beginnings have given the Levesque girls a new start in life, will More Beginnings be another chance for them?

♥♦♥ EXCERPT ♥♦♥

Zach Taylor’s young neighbour, Mia, let out a long sigh as she joined him on his front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool lemonade, he invited her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were weary of the unusual hot spell for the very southern Australian city.
With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and stared into the distance. “Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does it on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt.”
The dragon in question was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. There was no doubt that Mia liked school, and she enjoyed her classes. And even though English wasn’t her worst subject, it certainly was the toughest one, with Miss Peterson piling on homework one after the other.
Zach took a sip of his drink before he replied, “Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What’s that supposed to mean you’re ‘spoilt’?”
She lifted her shoulder in a slight shrug. “You know!”
Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”
Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”
Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip.

Clelebrating the Release Day of Just For The Holidays

I'm delighted to welcome Sue Moorcroft today for the start of her blog tour to celebrate the release of her latest book Just For The Holidays.

Blurb:
In theory, nothing could be better than a summer spent basking in the French sun. That is, until you add in three teenagers, two love interests, one divorcing couple, and a very unexpected pregnancy.

Admittedly, this isn’t exactly the relaxing holiday Leah Beaumont was hoping for – but it’s the one she’s got. With her sister Michele’s family falling apart at the seams, it’s up to Leah to pick up the pieces and try to hold them all together.

But with a handsome helicopter pilot staying next door, Leah can’t help but think she might have a few distractions of her own to deal with…

A glorious summer read, for you to devour in one sitting - perfect for
fans of Katie Fforde, Carole Matthews and Trisha Ashley.

Sue has kindly agreed to interview her heroine Leah Beaumont for us....

Sue Moorcroft: So, Leah, what’s taking you to France for all of August? It sounds lovely.
Leah Beaumont: My sister Michele said ‘Please’ a lot. She’s just ended her marriage and discovered she’s pregnant so I’m not sure that ‘lovely’ is the right word.
SM: Oh. Inconvenient.
LB: Agree. I’m on gardening leave before taking up a new post at Chocs-a-million in September and she’s feeling weak and weepy so she’s asked me to take Alister’s place. She doesn’t like driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and she wants me to do the outdoorsy stuff with the kids.
SM: Your kids?
LB: My kids? I don’t have kids. Natasha and Jordan are Michele and Alister’s kids. I love them to bits as their cool auntie and take them karting and stuff but I’m definitely not mother material.
SM: But you don’t mind driving on the continent?
LB: No, I like driving. I was feeling despondent at the idea of driving Michele’s big pink people carrier, ‘The Pig’, but now Alister’s coming with us to Alsace he’ll drive that and I can take my lovely Porsche. It’s a bit middle-aged but it’s a lovely drive. Pretty much everything is, when compared to The Pig.
SM: Back up! Alister’s going on holiday with you? I thought you said he and Michele have split up?
LB: It’s a novel arrangement, isn’t it? Michele asked me to go instead of him but then he said there was room for him and he’d miss the kids too much if they were away for the whole month, so there was no reason for him not to go. Michele knew Jordan and Natasha would hate her if she said ‘no’ so she said ‘yes’.
SM: You don’t need to go then! You’re free.
LB: That’s what I thought. But Michele said, ‘You’re not going to back out on me. Are you?’ To be honest, she’s in a mess and it’s impacting on the kids so it’s probably better if I’m there. I just hope that the weather’s fine so we’re not all cooped up in the gîte.
SM: Tense.
LB: I can entertain the kids for a couple of hours with a bit of a family ‘bake off’ but not for four weeks.
SM: Bake off? Are you a devoteé of the TV programme?
LB: A bit. I’m a chef by profession but I’ve moved into food products. I’m a chocolate taster. And, before you ask, yes it is a real job, and no, it’s not silly, and yes, I do get paid for it, but, no, I don’t sit around munching Mars Bars all day.
SM: Oh, OK. So what do you do?

LB: I assess chocolate and chocolate products for quality and for marketability. Yes, I do taste it, but I also create chocolates for boxed collections and trial other people’s recipes.

SM: Wow. That sounds like one of the world’s coolest jobs.

LB: I think it’s #1 on the cool list. I’m very lucky! I wish Michele would take me a bit more seriously sometimes but, apart from that, I love it.

SM: OK, well, time’s up. Enjoy your holiday in the gîte in France. Bon voyage! Try and defuse the tension between Michele and Alister – finding out she’s pregnant just as she gave Alister his marching orders couldn’t have been much fun.

LB: You’re right. And how bad can it be to live with Michele’s family at this awkward time? It’s just for the holidays.

Healing Seas ~ New Release

I'm delighted to share in fellow author and good friend Christina Lorenzen's release of her latest book Healing Seas.

In just a matter of days, Addie Mayfield’s life is upended. Through an arrangement her father makes, she sets sail on the RMS Titanic as governess to the two young Fairchild children. When tragedy strikes, she finds herself rescued alongside strangers on the RMS Carpathia, headed for New York City. Far from home, she is taken in by the O’Reilly family to wait for her family to send for her. With no money for her passage home, she’s brought to the small hamlet of Montauk to become a caretaker for a great aunt she has never met.

Captain Frank Shea is a man without a ship. Removed from duty as captain of the RMS Morrow, he’s come to Montauk to recover from a leg injury. More painful than the injury is his fall from grace after spending his entire life at sea. The ocean was his home and he has never needed anyone. Now faced with an uncertain future, he’s desperate for a way back to the sea. Until he meets Addie Mayfield, a woman who is just as lost as he is.
Can these two people find hope for the future after all they’ve lost? Can an unexpected
love heal two broken souls?

Interview of heroine, Addie Mayfield.
CL: Tell me how you came to be traveling on the Titanic’s maiden voyage.

AM: It’s something I would never have dreamed of. My family doesn’t have a lot of money so a trip like that would be something we wouldn’t even think about. My parents have always wanted a better life for my sister Emma and I. When my father was introduced to Aesop Hancock, the owner of the Bedford Wake, which is a very fancy hotel, Mr. Hancock told him how the Fairchild family was looking for a governess to join them on a trip to the America. The family was sailing on the Titanic and eventually would head to Boston. My father thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for me to work for this family.
CL:  How did you feel about becoming a governess for the Fairchild family?
AM: Well, it wasn’t my dream. I’ve always loved art. Drawing to be exact. I thought maybe working for Mr. and Mrs. Fairchild might help me with my art career. So in that way I was excited. And the Fairchild children were just lovely.
CL: Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as planned as the Titanic sank during the voyage. The Fairchild family did not survive, but you did.
AM: Yes. I still can’t believe it. I can’t get the images out of my head. I can’t forget what I saw. I can’t bare to think about all those people. And the Fairchilds.
CL:  You were one of over a hundred people brought to New York City on the RMS Carpathia. What happened when you arrived?
AM: I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do. I was alone. I don’t even remember all the details, but I did end up with a lovely family, the O’Reillys. If it weren’t for them I don’t know what might have happened to me.
CL: How did you come to the small fishing hamlet of Montauk after being with the O’Reilly family?
AM: I had been waiting for word from my family back in England. I thought I might be going home, when I realized they would never have that kind of money for the passage back home. An arrangement was made for me to go to Montauk to be a caretaker for my Great Aunt Tillie.
CL: You had never met Great Aunt Tillie? Had you ever heard of her?
AM: No, I never knew I had an aunt in America. She’s my father’s aunt.
CL:  Tell us about meeting Captain Frank Shea.
AM: Well, he came to my aunt’s door on the first day I had gotten there. He was quite…quite fall of himself I felt. Rather abrupt and rude. He was looking for money from Aunt Tillie.
CL:  And finally, what was it about Frank Shea that led you to fall in love with him?
AM: <blushes profusely> He just seemed to understand what I’d been through with so very few words. I didn’t have to tell him everything. He just seemed to understand. And while I thought he was rude I began to realize that he had his own wounds that he was hiding behind. He’s really quite a tender, sensitive man. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but since I have to stay on here in Montauk at Aunt Tillie’s I want to spend time getting to know more about Frank. I’m beginning to feel hopeful about the future – for us both.

About the author...
Christina started writing as a young teen, jotting stories in wire ring composition notebooks. Her
first typewriter made it faster to get all those stories out of her head and down on paper. Her love of writing has sustained her through a myriad of jobs that included hairdresser, legal secretary, waitress and door-to-‑door saleswoman.

Luckily for her, writing proved to be successful and a lot less walking than going door to door. Healing Seas, her first historical romance, is Christina's fifth book. She is also the author of A Husband for Danna, its sequel, A Wife for Humphrey, Snow Globe Reunion and Harvest Blessings. She is busy working on a modern retelling of the classic tale, Rapunzel. When she isn't writing or reading, she can be found walking her dog, talking to her herd of cats and spending time with her family.
