Six Sentence Sunday 30th

As always, my thanks to everyone who stops by. I appreciate your company and your comments.
This week I am again posting six sentences from my current WIP. Today's offering carries on from last week.

Hardening her heart against the hurt she saw in his eyes, Debra focussed on the reason for her outrage. She’d battled the petty restrictions placed on a single woman, and the constant need for a chaperone since her early release from the schoolroom, until her marriage. But Harold always accepted her as his equal, and his recognition of her sharp mind and ability to work beside him soon assured her a place in the everyday working of his estate. They’d ridden the countryside together, visited tenants, and spent many hours discussing all aspects of the estate’s wellbeing and future together in the evenings. Everything she knew, she’d learned from Harold.

“And you’re nothing if you’re not a quick study,” he often told her with a laugh that usually ended with a cuddle.

This week I'm sharing another snippet from a first draft of another short paranormal WIP, ~ Wolfman.

The force of its inner rage rolled across the intervening space, threatening to buckle her knees.

White-knuckled, she clutched the top of the barrier and watched the distant wolf glance toward the fascinated visitors before refocusing on the dominant male and his family.

Somehow she wasn’t surprised to see the lone male heading for the perimeter near where she stood. He ignored the interest of the rest of the pack as he drew close.

The intensity in his eyes caught and held her attention. She froze. Only the animal in front of her mattered. Broad shoulders rippled beneath his grey and silver fur. It reminded her of her husband’s shoulder-length mane of silver-blonde hair. Was the wolf’s fur soft like Alex’s hair, or coarse to the touch? Where had that thought come from?

Alex! Her heart’s silent cry filled her head.

“I’m here, Jen. I need your help to get me out.”

Jen swung round and searched the crowd. Why couldn’t she see him when he sounded so close?

Title: Heartsent
Author: Kay Springsteen
Publisher: Astraea Press
Genre: Mainstream Contemporary Inspirational Romance
Length: Full 264 pages
Heat: Sweet
Rating: 4.5
Review request and book provided by author.

Blurb:
With her strict no-dating-within-the-department rule, Firefighter Lina Standish has a nickname in the Salem Hills Fire Department: Lina “Standoffish”. But Firefighter Kevin Daly has had his eye on Standoffish ever since a locker room incident nearly a year earlier, and now he plans to break all her rules. With the help of his niece and a hot-air balloon, he gets Lina’s attention and she agrees to “hang out” with Kevin as friends off duty, to take it slow and see where things go between them. Then Lina's life is turned upside down by a surprise miracle who doesn't even have a name. Kevin’s ready to step up, but is Lina?

Review:

From the title, to the dedication then on to the final period, this book will grab your heart and squeeze it—hard. This author’s gift of description in every facet of her writing draws the reader in and gives them an almost ‘fly-on-the-wall’ feeling of being right beside her characters.

I have heard some readers say ‘they skip’ the descriptions in a book. This author weaves them in so skilfully they become an integral part of the story.

Do not be misled into assuming this author’s gentle writing style offers a light-hearted, fluffy reading. It doesn’t. In Heartsent, Ms Springsteen deals with the consequences of loss and honouring forgotten promises.

Her heroine, Lina, is no superwoman, and yet she rises to the challenge presented by her author and comes good. More than that, she grows while dealing with the plethora of testing situations she is suddenly confronted with.

Toss in a hero, fellow fire-fighter, work colleague and friend, Kevin, and you have poor Lina not knowing which end is ‘up’. Knowing he has an uphill struggle persuading Lina to change her rules of not dating a fellow worker, Kevin perseveres. He is there for her when her world spins off its axis. Too much so, I thought at one bit. But Ms Springsteen has that covered.

As with all good romances there is ‘that’ moment when true love runs off the rails, but thanks to the wisdom of Kevin’s mother…

There is a plethora of secondary characters, all with specific roles to play, and all moving the plot along fluently. Kevin’s niece, Meely Bug will charm your socks off, so have plenty of tissues at hand.

If I have a nit with Heartsent it is the fact that in the world of e-books and global readers, I didn’t know, and was pulled out of the story for a time, while I tried to work out what a ‘Parkway’ was. I never did, and had to assume my own interpretation was accurate enough for those particular scenes to make sense. From an author whose descriptive skills leave me breathless, this lack was a surprise.

Do not be fooled into thinking because Heartsent is in the sweet, inspirational romance genre that it will lack depth. You would be so very wrong. It is packed with tension, emotion, suspense, and contains a depth that will make it hard to put this book down before the last page is turned.

Ms. Springsteen is an author who’s outstanding output never fails to amaze. Every book she writes is a winner, and this one is no exception.

Please welcome Astraea Press author Meg Mims,

Hi Meg,
Thank you for visiting The Heart of Romance Blog.

Hi Sherry! You’re welcome!

Please will you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’ve been writing for 15 years, off and on, in fiction and nonfiction. I’m a watercolour/acrylic/collage artist also.

How did your debut novel, Double Crossing evolve?
I had foot surgery after an extended period of not writing, so I decided to get “back in the game” by writing a complete novel again. I took part of an old romance manuscript, overhauled, researched and turned it into a suspense, and had a solid first draft. Then I wrote a traditional mystery for the Writing Popular Fiction M.A. program at Pennsylvania’s Seton Hill University. Those two years helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. I revised Double Crossing in early 2010 and entered several RWA contests to test it out. In nearly every one, it reached the finals and placed 2nd, 3rd or 4th. I knew from the positive comments DC was ready to submit. However, traditional Christian romance publishers thought the Inspirational elements weren’t enough, and DC was “too clean” for other publishers. I submitted to Astraea Press and received an offer in less than a week.

Are you a pantser or plotter?
Plotter. I stopped being a pantser long ago, when I’d start writing and then end up wandering in the middle or near the dark moment, without a clue what to write next. Now I plan the story and character arcs out in detail. Or as much as I can.

How long did it take you to write Double Crossing?
First draft—three months. Revisions—two. Tweaking—probably a few weeks.

How would your heroine describe you?
SLOW!! Lol. Lily kept hammering me to write her story the way SHE wanted it told, in first person, and quit researching so much. And one key scene (that she failed to tell me about) didn’t come until the very end of revisions. So we had our troubles, all right.

If you were introduced to your hero at a party, what do you think his first words to you would be?
Ha! If he’d even get in, given his lack of manners and dust-coated boots and clothing. He’s a man of few words, too. He’d probably say, “I clean up good. Trust me.”

What is your favourite flower and why?
I love irises, purple because they’re so delicate. And zinnias of every colour. Impatiens, same reason. Bellflowers. Black-eyed Susan and white Shasta daisies. Foxglove, peonies, tea roses, marigolds, you name it. I want a well-tended English flower garden—but instead mine is straggly and weedy and a mess. Sigh. But I love flowers because I love to paint them.

Where is your favourite place in the world (If you say ‘home, please maintain your own security)
Mackinac Island. I love the history of the place, the serenity of no cars, the horse and buggies, bicycles, the lovely houses and hotels, especially the Grand Hotel. But if I ever visit Ireland, I might change my mind.

Do you base your characters on people you know? If so do you tell them?
No. I may use first names of people I know, but my characters evolve into their own personalities once I research their backgrounds in full—from education to family and features to the best/worst days of their lives.

Research, how much do you do for your books, and do you ever get distracted by it?
Absolutely! I love putting in historical details—and since I’ve researched so much since my college days, I can usually remember what I’ve read before and expand on it for whatever I might need. The train history for Double Crossing was fascinating, and I always got side-tracked (sorry for the pun!) into something not useable. But maybe some day...

How important is humour in your writing?
If it comes, I put it in. You can’t force it. I don’t deliberately try to write it, and I’m surprised if people find things funny in my writing.

Do you control your characters, or do they control you?
I’m in control now. When I first started writing, that wasn’t the case. One minor character took over a manuscript, and I eventually realized he was equal to the heroine. I still need to finish the revisions to that one.

If you could afford any car in the world, what would it be?
I’d want ‘The Leslie Special’ used in the Great Race movie. :-D

Is there any information you’d like to put out there, I have not covered? If so, please put it here :-)
I’m a cookie freak—Christmas cookies of all kinds, Pecan Sandies, jam-filled thumbprints and Linzer cookies, date bars, oatmeal-cranberry-chocolate chip, and shortbread with dark chocolate drizzles. Call it a cookie, I’ll try it. I love putting food details in my books too.

Please will you tell us about Double Crossing? (Blurb and Excerpt + whatever else you wish to say about it.)
A murder arranged as a suicide … a missing deed … and a bereft daughter whose sheltered world is shattered.

August, 1869: Lily Granville is stunned by her father’s murder. Only one other person knows about a valuable California gold mine deed — both are now missing. Lily heads west on the newly opened transcontinental railroad, determined to track the killer. She soon realizes she is no longer the hunter but the prey.

As things progress from bad to worse, Lily is uncertain who to trust—the China-bound missionary who wants to marry her, or the wandering Texan who offers to protect her … for a price. Will Lily survive the journey and unexpected betrayal?

This week I'm sharing a snippet from a first draft of another short paranormal WIP, ~ Wolfman.

Wolfman
Four weeks ago Alex went out for a bottle of wine, and disappeared.
Where was he?
And why was she here at the local zoo?
For no good reason she could identify, Jenny found herself heading for the wolf compound. The hairs on the back of her neck tingled as she approached. She counted seven of them. A couple sleeping in the shade of a tree, a mother and her three cubs gambolled near the artificial river watched over by an alpha male standing on a rock overhanging the water, his attention divided between the playful family and the solitary male across the enclosure.
Something about the lone male reached out to her. His desolation and confusion fused with her sense of loss.

Borley Rectory-Essex (1862-1939)- The Most Haunted House in Britain

Borley Rectory, reputed to be the most haunted house in the UK was built in 1863 by Rev. Henry D. E. Bull.
In 1939  a fire  raised the rectory to the ground in mysterious circumstances.
The most popular story to the background of Borley was that in 1362 Benedictine Monks built a monastery on the site which would later hold the rectory.

Legend told of a nun from the Bures convent, 7 miles southeast of Borley falling in love with a monk from the monastery. They had decided to elope to be together, but the elders discovered their plans. A friend of the monk was to drive a carriage to help them escape. On the fateful night they were captured by the elders. The coachman was beheaded, the monk hanged and the nun was bricked up alive in the walls of the vaults beneath the rectory. Their ghosts have haunted the site ever since.

Henry Price made it his life's work to investigate the reupted hauntings and the following links will give you more information.
http://www.ghost-story.co.uk/stories/borleyrectory5.html
http://www.ghost-story.co.uk/stories/borleyrectory4.html
http://www.ghost-story.co.uk/stories/borleyrectory4.html

The wall writings that appeared were investigated by many of the different occupants over the years.
The Borley rectory writings on the wall is one of the most interesting manifestation of the famous Borley rectory haunting, which was probably the first case of ghost hunting in history. They believed the writings had come from a young deceased catholic woman who wanted her body to be discovered and receive a proper Christian burial ceremony. She was trying to communicate with Marianne, wife of the Reverend Lionel Foyster, the couple living in the rectory in October 1930. We can read "Marianne... please help get" and "Marianne light mass prayers". Marianne wrote that she couldn't understand some of the writings.

Six Sentence Sunday

As always, my thanks to everyone who stops by. I appreciate your company and your comments.

This week I am again posting six sentences from my current WIP. Today's offering carries on from last week.

Unable to sit still a moment longer, Deborah jumped up from the settee and stalked towards her sibling. “You come here uninvited and have the effrontery to demand to see my books, and to interview Brandon, my estate manager.” Fighting her desire to smack him in the face she whirled away and back again. “You’re coming it a bit too strong, my lord,” she said with all the hauteur she could muster.

“I didn’t know it had come to waiting for an invitation before I could visit my oldest sister.”

As always, my thanks to everyone who stops by. I appreciate your company and your comments.

This week I am again posting six sentences from my current WIP.  Today's offering carries on from last week.

“I have come to look through your accounts before I speak with Brandon.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“You are a woman.”   Worth paused for the effect of his words to sink in.
“I am aware of that!  And,” she huffed out a breath, her intention to maintain her temper abandoned, “if you are implying that as a woman I am incapable of running my late husband’s estates... estates, moreover, that Harold left in my sole charge, I suggest you acquit yourself of that misconception.”

This week I'm sharing a last snippet of my short paranormal story, Riddick.

My niggling suspicions ballooned, explaining the unease I’d experienced earlier. “No!”

“Yes!” The adamant contradiction slapped at my beliefs, sweeping them away, like ice in a heat-wave, and settled somewhere deep in my heart. “When you arrived, we watched and waited. We had to make sure, you see.”

I looked beyond the tow-haired, emerald-eyed god standing in my palm. “No I don’t see anything at all.” I apologised. “Who are you?” Apparently, he had the advantage. He knew me, but I knew nothing of him or his identity.

“I am Riddick. King of the Faeries.”

Today Kerri interviews Judge Mom…Redux…

Guest Blog Day #3:
Interview with Judge Mom…Redux…

Kerri is crouched down in a dark pit, the walls made from compacted mud.

Kerri: Hello? (she whispers shakily)

A flicker of light nearby draws her attention followed by the sound of clicking footsteps.

A sexy male voice with the hint of a British accent sounds: Who do we have here?

Kerri: Uh…I’m looking for Paisley?

The owner of the sexy male voice comes into view. He’s holding a small lantern which casts a wicked glow about his breathtakingly handsome face.

Sexy Male: She’s not here at the moment. Well, really she is here but she won’t be available to see guests for quite a while.

Kerri: (feels the sudden urge for a potty break) If I could just get back to my car, I’ll get out of your way then.

Sexy Male: Ah now, no need to be afraid. I’m Camden.

Kerri: (Eyes him warily) Nice to meet you, Camden. Are you a friend of Paisley’s?

Camden: Well, sort of. She certainly doesn’t appreciate my helpfulness though.

Kerri: (Not immediately convinced by his poor me routine) Well, I would be appreciative if you could get me back to my car.

Camden: (Reaches out and caresses Kerri’s cheek) Ssshh…let’s not worry about that right now.

Kerri: (Heart thundering inside her ears)

Zelef: Geez, leave the author alone, would ya?

Camden retracts his hand and turns toward Zelef.

Camden: Would you kindly mind your own business?

Zelef: You mind your own business. Paisley is looking for you.

Camden and Kerri: Me?

Zelef looks back and forth between the two of them who have responded in unison.

Zelef: Sorry girlie, she’s looking for Camden. You have to be going now. This interview isn’t going to happen.

Kerri: Sure. No problem. I just need to get back to my car.

Camden: I can take her to her car.

Zelef: No way. Get your demon mind out of the gutter and go find Paisley. She’s not happy.

Camden: What’s new?

Zelef: Excuse me?

Camden turns and gives Kerri a wry smile and a wink and then he’s gone.

Kerri: I think I’ve got enough information for my story.

Zelef: (shakes head and then leans in closer to Kerri) You can never write about what you’ve seen here. Never.

Kerri: (nods) No worries. No worries at all.

And really, this is all I can tell you about the time I attempted to interview the new Judge Mom and the time I spent in the Underworld. But what I can tell you is that if you enjoy many zany characters, one large dose of mayhem and chaos, and true collection of humorous situations…please check out Courting Demons. Warning: Fits of Laughter May Occur and Author Not Liable for any Spewed Drinks Damage to Computer Keyboard!

Book Title: Courting Demons

Blurb:

Paisley Barton was already having a bad day before she turned her husband into a rat.

First, she was fired by her boss and then came home to find hubby in the shower with a naked blonde chick. They say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned but this break-up may just unleash hell on Earth when Paisley casts a spell of vengeance against her philandering husband.

After her spell casting inadvertently opens a portal between dimensions, Paisley finds her family home transformed into a nightly courtroom for settling disputes between demons of the underworld and she’s the judge! If that’s not enough, she’s got to deal with a charming, ancient demon named Camden who wants to be her personal bodyguard while trying to explain her husband’s sudden, mysterious disappearance to sexy police Detective Dalton Briggs.

But Paisley will show them all that an everyday working mom is better equipped than most to deal with the mystical mayhem…and with a tempting demon hottie and a flirtatious young detective vying for her affection, she soon learns that being single again isn’t so bad after all.

Kerri gives us a peak in A Day in the Life of an Author Mom

Guest Blog Day #2:

A Day in the Life of an Author Mom

A lot of people ask me what “a day in the life” is like for me and it really does vary each day. Let me share with you one day this past weekend wherein I was attempting to attend a writer’s conference in…Georgia.

Luckily, I had family that agreed to keep my two girls for the weekend so that hubby could drive me to the event. But my toddler was tagging along for the ride. He’s a little over 1 year old and a handful. So here’s how my Saturday went.

6:30 a.m. Awaken to annoying cell phone alarm. I’m on Central time which is an hour behind the local time for conference so this is really 5:30 a.m. for me.

6:45 a.m. Get up and grumbling…make my way to unsatisfactory shower and the “shared” towel that hubby and I had to use because the hotel ran out of clean towels (I kid you not).

7:15 a.m. Finished showering and dressing to find toddler awake and racing around the hotel room with sagging dirty diaper. Hubby watches the news on television from bed.

7:30 a.m. After changing toddler, race out of room to grab some breakfast for the fellas and keeping an eye on the clock for my 8 a.m. appointment with a photographer (yes, I left the room without make-up).

8:00 a.m. After woofing down huge quantities of bacon and leaving the remainder of the food for my boys, I barely squeak through the door for my make-up and photo session on time.

9:00 a.m. Done with make-up session (which was great) and photo shoot (which was fun except I was wearing a sleeveless top and the temperature outside had turned to a surprise unseasonably cold 50 something degrees or less!)

9:30 a.m. Get boys ready to depart for their day of fun at the golf course and lay on bed contemplating just sleeping in and skipping conference completely. Mommy hasn’t slept through a night in about 3 years now. Did I mention I have 2 children under the age of 3?

10:00 a.m. Roust myself up and back down to conference to attend several workshops but all I can think about is lunch. I’m starving!

12:00 p.m. Lunch finally arrives but the food is…well…kind of like a combination of beef jerky and cardboard (a/k/a overcooked roast beef and some unidentifiable rice dish). But the guest speaker, bestselling author Eloisa James is absolutely wonderful. Makes the lunch bearable.

2:00 p.m. Attend one more class and then back to room to check on tired boy who has not had a nap and needs a bath after golf course running.

3:30 p.m. Hubby and little one settled in with snacks and clean diapers (my son—not hubby—LOL) and they are watching Saturday afternoon football. Mommy heads back downstairs to my very first book signing event!

5:30 p.m. Book signing is over and I believe a great success for me. Sold some books. Met some of my formers students. Chatted with many other talented authors and smiled a lot.

6:00 p.m. Back in room and still starving! Haven’t really eaten all day.

7:00 p.m. Gobble up about 4 pieces of pizza with my boys and then get in shower. I have a banquet to attend.

7:30 p.m. Make the mistake of getting on the bed for just a minute to rest my aching feet.

Oops! End of day for writer Mommy! Banquet was missed but a lot was accomplished nonetheless. It might not be possible to “do it all” when you’re a writer and a Mom. But you can do a lot.

Tell me how you juggle your work load on a daily basis.

“When a wronged wife turns her cheating husband into a rat, you know you have to keep reading! Kerri Nelson offers up a lot of fun and wild magic in Courting Demons!” --Bestselling author, Linda Wisdom, Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend

An Interview with Judge Mom:

Today, I’m doing something a little different. I’ve decided to interview my main character from Courting Demons, Paisley Barton. Here’s what she had to say…

Kerri: Hi, Paisley and welcome to the book tour for the book which tells the tale of your recent adventures in small town Georgia.

Paisley: Thanks Kerri, but I may not be able to stay long…I’m having “kid issues”.

Kerri: Yes, I can understand that completely. I have quite a few kids myself.

Paisley: Yes, well…I appreciate your understanding but you have no idea what I’m dealing with here.

Kerri: Really? So, has something happened since we left you at the end of Courting Demons?

Paisley: (sigh) Really, I can’t talk about it here (looks over shoulder). They could be listening in.

Kerri: (looks around suspiciously but sees nothing) Okay then, let’s get back to the interview.

Voice cries out nearby: Mom! Moooooom!

Paisley: Oh, Crap. That’s my son Marshall, I’ve got to go check on him.

Kerri: Sure, go ahead.

5 minutes pass.

10 minutes pass.

Small elf wearing bowler hat enters the room.

Kerri: Uh, hi…where’s Paisley?

Elf replies: She’s a little tied up at the moment. You know, Judge duties and all that. I’m Zelef and I’ll be completing the remainder of her interview, if you don’t mind.

Kerri: Uh, well…okay…hmmm…but my interview was really supposed to be all about “regular moms” and how we might handle it if our life got turned upside down by suddenly becoming a Judge for the Underworld.

Zelef: (raises eyebrows) And you’re questioning my abilities as an interviewee?

Kerri: No, no…of course not. I…just…well…you’re not a mom…are you?

Zelef: (glares at Kerri)

Kerri: Okay then, perhaps we should just reschedule for when Paisley has more time.

Zelef: (taps foot impatiently) That won’t be happening anytime soon. She has…new issues…

Kerri: Could you give us a hint about the new issues she’s facing?

Zelef: Let’s just say…the new drama in her life makes the rat drama look like a day at Disneyland.

Kerri: (giggles) Disneyland. That makes me think of Mickey Mouse and well…you said rat drama…and…

Zelef: (annoyed grunt) This is no laughing matter, girlie. You have no idea what is going on here in Georgia. You’ll be lucky if the entire state doesn’t go down in flames any minute.

Kerri: (stops laughing) Okay…this sounds serious…shouldn’t we get out here then?

Zelef: (snaps fingers and disappears into thin air)

Kerri: I guess this concludes our interview, folks. I’m not sure what is going on but I’m heading west and out of here…

(Rumbling from beneath.)

Kerri: (jumps to feet, drops interview notebook, runs towards door)

To be continued….

Thanks for hosting today, Sherry. See you back tomorrow with more fun!

Six Sentence Sunday

As always, my thanks to all of you who stop by and read my efforts. I appreciate your company.  I particularly appreciated the comments last week

This week I am again posting six sentences from my current WIP, which I forgot to mention last week is my first dip into Regency Romance.  For this week's offering I have gone back to an earlier chapter where the heroine's brother is critising her behaviour.

“You are such a fussbudget, Freddie. No one takes any notice of a woman riding alone when she’s widowed.” Deborah Stavely offered a serene smile in her brother’s direction, well knowing how much it would infuriate him.

Frederick Dalrymple, the fifth Lord Worth, frowned down at his sister. “And you are misinformed, madam,” he snapped. “I have it on good authority you are becoming the talk of the locals.”

Sweet Saturday Samples - 29th Sept.

Thank you to everyone who visits every week and to those joining us all this week. Click here-> Sweet Saturday Samples to enjoy many other fabulous excerpts.

This week I'm sharing one more snippet of my short paranormal story, Riddick.

“What kind of behaviour is that, I’d like to know?” Hands on hips and flashing green eyes told me what he thought of my instinctive reaction to his presence.

“I’m very sorry,” I kept my voice penitent, and reached my hand down for him to step onto. “I didn’t know you were there.

“Didn’t know I was there?” His indignation ripped over me, like waves in a storm. “Of course you knew I was there. You were looking right at me.”

“I was looking at a moth.” I corrected. He didn’t have sole rights to indignation, and mine was growing exponentially with every twist and turn in the unfolding situation.

“Like I say.” His satisfaction flowed over me liked warm honey.” You were looking right at me.”
