Here are a few snippets to whet your appetite
~~~~
“Why now?”
“There you find us at a stand. The reason for the timing still escapes us. But,” he paused and held their gazes for several seconds, “whatever it is, we are running out of time.”
“We are?” Julian leaned forward in his chair. “And you say this because?”
“Is that the letter Deborah received yesterday?” Henrietta watched her husband pull the note she’d seen the day before from his pocket.
“It is. And if things were not so serious, I would have torn a strip off her for withholding its contents from me.”
“Well at the moment, you are keeping us in the dark, dear, so get a move on and tell us what it says.”
~~~~

“I have my own estates in Lincolnshire, I neither need nor want yours.” He let the bald words settle in her psyche before adding, “I am willing to do this to help you save your lands and your tenants’ wellbeing. Are you?”
Her gaze never left his face as the silence stretched between them. After a heartbeat she nodded. “I have little option. Harold left them in my care and I can’t fail them now. Thank you.”
Although she tried to hide it, the haunted look in her eyes deepened.
~~~~~
“Thirsty.” The single word that rasped through Julian’s lips drew her back to the present, and Deborah reached out for the glass of lemonade and a spoon.
“Lie still and let me give you something to drink.”
Employing the same method they used to apply his medicine, Deborah spooned the fresh juice through his lips until he nodded. All the while his attention locked on her face. She set the glass down and stood, and moved from one side of his bed to the other noting with relief his gaze followed her. She pulled a chair away from the candle light and sat down again.
“What can you remember?”
“Fire.” His brow pleated with anxiety.
“Do not try to force your memory. But you are right there was a fire, and you saved the lives of two women. Unfortunately the floor above you caved in seconds before you reached safety.”
