Blurb:
Sheilagh McCullough has been pretending to be someone else her entire life. When she takes her rebellious act too far, her overbearing brothers decide it’s time for her to grow up and face her future. After six years of procrastination and parties, Sheilagh is finally going to college.

Dr. Alec Devereux is an ethical man, but when Sheilagh McCullough enrolls in his class, his morals as a professor are put to the test. Persistent and logical, Alec unravels the mysterious woman who has captured his heart only to discover the greatest threat to their future might be her past.

A courageous journey of the soul that confronts one woman’s fears of love and embraces the truth in her heart.

Excerpt: ---WARNING --- Strong language ---
“You have no right!”

“Shut up!” the three of them shouted at once.

Her eyes prickled with unshed tears as they drove. Under the passing shadows she saw each one of them staring away from her, fury stamped into their set jaws. She kicked the seat in front of her and Tristan grunted.

After she discovered Luke and Tristan’s affair, Tristan handled her with kid gloves. Sheilagh didn’t want his pity. She was tougher than that. She was a McCullough, for Christ’s sake. She had five crazy brothers and she could hold her own with every single one of them.

The farther they drove out of town, the more self-doubt crept in. “Where are we going?”

No one answered. The commercial storefronts faded away as Kelly turned the SUV onto the highway leading out of town. As they took the jug handle onto the interstate her concern doubled. Their anger was so thick it seemed to siphon the air right out of the car.

Her concern for herself doubled as her eyes rapidly blinked back tears, forcing those telling little spills to stay put where others couldn’t see. Her entire existence focused on hiding those telltale signs of weakness from the world.

She hated that her stupid, childish heart was permanently damaged and her life derailed. Since the day she’d discovered Luke and Tristan, she’d been going at the world like a runaway train, making one poor choice after another and leaving nothing but self-destruction in her wake. It was the only way she knew to control the pain, control herself. But in truth, over the last few years she felt out of control and with every stupid transgression came another reason to hate herself.

She wasn’t sure she’d ever be normal again. She wasn’t breaking hearts, just breaking herself, battering pieces of her broken heart, little by little, with each poor decision.

Suddenly the car swerved. She slammed into Luke and he pushed her off. Gravel spewed under the tires as Kelly tore onto the shoulder and threw the SUV in park.

It was dark and no one said a word. Fear tickled her spine. Why were they there? It was completely dark and eerie and she wondered if this was their version of some kind of confessional.

The sound of their breathing sawed out of their lungs and she waited. Luke, of course, broke the silence. “Are you out of your god damn mind?”

She turned to unleash the fury inside of her. “Oh, shut up, Luke! You have no right to pass judgment on me!”

Kelly swiveled in his seat, his blue eyes boring into her through the dark. “What did you suspect people would do after you bared your titties for the town? Praise you? Christ, Sheilagh, use your fucking head!”

“Like you have any room to talk, Kelly! There isn’t a woman in Center County who hasn’t seen your wank!”

“And do you think I didn’t pay a price for my actions, Sheilagh?” Kelly stormed.

No, she didn’t. Kelly lived the high life and still managed to find his soul mate. No one in this car had a right to even pretend they understood what it felt like to be invisible.

“It’s like the sheep fucker!” Kelly snarled and turned toward the windshield.

What? “What?”

“Shamus the sheep fucker!” her brother snapped. “The old Irishman in the bar that built the church and sailed the sea, but no one remembers that because he fucked one sheep.”

“No one’s fucking a sheep, you moron!”

“Well, what do you think people would say if you started stripping? You wouldn’t be Sheilagh the beautiful McCullough or Sheilagh the genius. No, you’d only be Sheilagh the stripper. Do you want that kind of reputation?”

She crossed her arms over her breasts and glared out the window.

Tristan turned. “Why would you do this, Shei?”

She blinked repeatedly. Because no one notices me anymore. Forcing an expression of indifference, she shrugged. “Why not?”

“You’re better than that. You know you are,” he said in a soft voice.

She didn’t know what to say back. Maybe she wasn’t better than that. Maybe that’s all she was meant to be, a stripper in some Podunk town.

Luke wouldn’t look at her, but she still heard him growl. “This is bullshit. When are you going to grow up?”

She pivoted and turned her glare on him. “Me? How about you, Luke? When are you going to grow up? You have an awful lot to say about how everyone lives their life, when you don’t have the balls to let the world see who you really are!”

The car grew deathly silent. Kelly said her name in warning and she snapped. “No! I’m sick of it! Just say it! Say it!”

“What do you want me to say?” Luke roared.

Tristan’s stare cut to her and she felt a pinch of regret much like the lament she saw in his eyes. Why couldn’t they just come out and let everyone know they were in love?

“This isn’t about Luke,” Tristan said quietly. “It never was. I’m sorry, Sheilagh. I know this isn’t what you asked for, but sometimes life is unfair.”

She fumed as she glared back at him. “I wanna go home.”

No one said anything for quite some time. “You’re going away,” Kelly finally announced.

“What?”

“You’re going to college. There’s nothing for you here and you know it. It’s time for you to get on with your life and make something of yourself.”

Author Spotlight ~ Jillian Chantal.

Author Bio:
Jillian Chantal is the nom de plume of a lawyer moonlighting as a writer of romantic fiction.   Most often she can be found either at her keyboard banging out words, working on a legal issue or just surfing the web and calling it research.  Her other guilty pleasure is her one-sided love affair with the actor Alan Rickman. She owns all his movies and would probably give away her cat for a chance to meet him. She’d keep her children, though. It would be a sacrifice, but she would be brave.

Jillian lives on the Florida Gulf Coast where she bemoans the humidity most of the year but she’s otherwise charming and engaging (at least in her own mind).

She has PRO status in the RWA and is an active member of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Romance Writer’s of America.

Blurb:Attorney Anna Kincaid doesn’t celebrate Christmas. It’s been a time of loss and sadness for her for too many years.
Matteo Sanchez, a criminal prosecutor, has been searching for the right woman for more years than he cares to recall.
In a local deli, Matteo, seated at the next table overhears a conversation Anna has with her friends that she wants a one night stand for Christmas. The next day, he introduces himself to her at the local bar association Christmas party. After an evening of passion, Anna discovers that Matteo knew about her wish before meeting her. Believing him to be a stalker and a cad, she throws him out of her house. Christmas may prove to be her enemy yet again.

Excerpt:
Her phone on the top of the table also kept vibrating with messages from Gina about the stupid bar party that night. Gina had a date and so did Renee and they wanted her to come and be with them. She had no doubt that they would hunt her down if she didn’t agree to go. Damn them. It was so not what she wanted to do. She wanted these depositions to end so she could go home, put on a cozy robe and have cocoa.
It didn’t seem that was going to happen and sure enough, when the day was over and she stepped out of her office to head home, Renee and Gina were standing there.
“Come on. We’re getting ready at Renee’s.” Gina took Anna by the arm.
“I told you I didn’t want to go. What’s so hard to understand about that?”
“We understand. We’re just not letting you do it. You need to get over being Scrooge and get into the party spirit,” Gina said.
“I don’t like Christmas.” Anna wanted to stomp her feet.
“Look, you like Halloween, right?” Renee asked.
“Yeah. I do. So what?”
Gina pulled Anna down the street. “So, let’s pretend it’s a Halloween party and someone has decorated their haunted house as a Christmas house. Can you do that?”
Anna laughed then. “You’re crazy.” She looked over her shoulder. “Both of you.”
“At least you’re laughing now. Come one. We got you a great dress to wear.” Renee jogged to catch up as they headed to the parking deck.
After changing at Renee’s house, Anna and her friends drove to the hotel where the bar association had its party every year. She shivered in the cold when they turned the car over to the valet.
Renee and Gina hurried Anna inside where they met their dates right inside the double doors. Anna glanced around at the number of Christmas trees scattered throughout the lobby. Way too much red and green for her. She giggled a bit at the dress her friends had made her put on. It was a black silk with an orange shawl-back collar. It was prim from the front with a high neckline but from the back, the orange shawl showed her muscled lateral muscles. It was pretty daring for her.
When she slipped the dress on, her friends reminded her of her wish for a one-night stand and their bet. Anna knew there would be no one at the bar party she’d care to run off with for the night but she wore the dress to humor them and to pretend it was a Halloween outfit. They really had tried hard to get her in the spirit of things— the spirit of a holiday that didn’t bother her, that is.

Review:-
(Book provided by author for review:-)

Jillian Chantal’s story, All I Want For Christmas, may be short, but it’s packed with pace, pathos, passion, plus a quirky sense of humour. And, of course, some seriously hot characters.

In the first sentence Ms. Chantal reveals her heroine, Anna’s take on Christmas. She hates it, and expects to go on hating it for ever more. But strange things happen in the run-up to the holiday. And Anna, completely out of character, makes a comment in response to a half-hearted dare that shocks her and has her two best friends taking her up on it.
And in the next chapter we meet the author’s hero, Matteo Sanchez. Who knew that lawyers could look so good? And Ms. Chantal’s hero is quick witted, he needs to be as a prosecutor, under pressure from his Mama to bring a girl home for Christmas. Sitting at the table next to Anna and her friends he hears her throw-away comment, hopes she acts on it, and when she doesn’t, decides not to miss the opportunity.

Ms. Chantal create vibrant settings, believable backchat and ribbing between the friends, and had this reader enjoying the escalation of passion between Anna and Matteo. It is fast, furious, and creates a fabulous twist near the end of the story that had this reader laughing in amusement and appreciation.

This reader has had the pleasure of following Ms. Chantal’s writing and enjoys the smooth fluency of it, the way she creates a scene and just when you wonder what she’s up to, she takes you down a totally unexpected and fun path.

Her characters are totally believable, and in a short story it is not easy to present fully formed and deep characters, but Ms. Chantal’s characters are a delight. Her secondary players annoy and tease in equal measure and fulfil their role in moving the story forward with expertise.

Yes, unquestionable, this is a Christmas story, but don’t let that put you off reading it at any time of the year.

At 49 pages this sensual romance is a one-sitting read that will keep you turning the pages until you discover just how Anna and Matteo clear a path through all their problems, and the hoops Ms. Chantal put them through.

Blurb:

When Calliope Flood catches the unwanted attention of prettiest and most privileged girls at her new school, she learns they are possessed of more than just good ole’ Southern charm; they are also possessed by the demons of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Whether she likes it or not, the Ravens want the pretty new girl to become one of their members.  Their club is so secret, only a select few know their truth.  As a budding journalist, Callie is more interested in investigating them than joining them.  When people begin to disappear, she soon discovers the Ravens aren’t just interested in her for her looks; slowly, she learns she’s a legacy.  Calliope enlists her eccentric Aunt, her new friends, and a quietly disarming Southern boy to form their own group, The Virtues, to free the girls, and the town, from the demons that have taken over their lives.

 Excerpt:

Walking into the cafeteria at lunchtime, Callie became uncomfortably aware of how few people she knew at this new school. She’d kept to herself mostly throughout the morning classes, not wanting to make waves, but more to get a lay of the land.  She decided she would do the same thing here in the cafeteria.   A quick scan around told her the only two people she did know by name, Meg and Suki, were nowhere in sight.  The lunchroom was in full swing and there was a long cue forming for food.  Reluctantly, she got in line and began to shuffle toward the counters without making eye contact with anyone.

“You trying to hide from someone?”  The voice was husky, amused, and familiar.  She looked up into the denim blue eyes of Cayden Welliver.

“No.  I just don’t know anyone.”

Cayden snapped his heels together and bowed deeply from the waist.  Callie wondered if everyone at this school was going to bow.  Straightening, he said, “Then allow me to introduce myself.  Cayden Welliver, the Third, at your service.”

            “Callie Flood.”

“Ah, I understand that’s Calliope Flood, niece to the esteemed and unpredictable Ms. Faith Flood, of Cranberry Lane, no less.”  Cayden gave her a winning smile.

            “You certainly are well informed.”

“As all good reporters for the much hailed Holly Hills Hawk should be, my dear lady.”

“And a reporter, too.  How lucky am I?” Callie drawled.

“Are you always this hard to please?”

            “Are you always this happy?”

“When I’m talking to the prettiest girl in school, I am.”

            “Whatever.”

“You’re not like the girls around here.”

“And you are nothing like the boys from home.”

“Were they as charming as us Southern gentlemen?”

            “Not exactly.”

“Well, let me show you how we do it in the ole’ South.”  Cayden leaned forward and took Callie’s tray just as the lunch lady finished filling it and shoved it toward her.  Deftly, he reached into his pocket and paid the cashier before Callie could object.  He slung his backpack over his shoulder and balanced their two trays on one arm.  Sliding his other arm around Callie’s waist, he guided her down the line.

            “Follow me,” he instructed.

Callie walked next to Cayden across the cafeteria, acutely aware they had become the focus of an uncomfortable amount of attention.  Uncomfortable for Callie only.  Cayden just sailed along like he didn’t even see them all staring at him.  Callie found herself envying him his ease.  It wouldn’t be the first time.  She also found herself admiring his frame, and a few other things as well.

Prince Regent chocolate cake recipe

(from UK TV Channel4 programme Come Dine With Me Mike Brett gave his guests a royal send off with this luscious dessert in Come Dine With Me, Wolverhampton)

Ingredients

  • 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil, for greasing
  • 250g butter, softened
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or a few drops of vanilla essence
  • 4 free-range medium eggs
  • 200g plain flour
  • 50g cornflour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
For the filling

  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 350-450g icing sugar
  • 250g unsalted butter, softened
  • 1-2 tbsp almond or coffee cream liqueur or freshly made strong coffee For the glaze
  • 150g plain dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids), broken into squares
  • 50g coconut oil or unsalted butter
  • 50ml coffee cream liqueur
  • Chocolate shavings, to decorate
METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. Base-line a 25cm loose-based cake tin with baking parchment and brush the base and sides with a little sunflower oil to grease. Cream the butter with the sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Slowly beat in the eggs then sift over the flour, cornflour and baking powder. Fold in lightly. (Use an electric mixer to make the cake batter if you like.)

2. Spread roughly a seventh of the mixture over the prepared cake tin and bake in the centre of the oven for 10 minutes. Remove, cool for a few minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and peel off the baking parchment. Wash the tin, base-line and grease once more. Spread a sixth of the cake batter over the tin and bake as before. Repeat the method until you have seven even-sized sponges. Leave the sponges to cool, separated by sheets of baking parchment.

3. To make the filling, sift the cocoa powder and 350g of the icing sugar into a bowl with the butter and cream together until smooth and fairly thick, adding more icing sugar if necessary. Stir in the liqueur or coffee and beat until soft. Put one of the sponges on a serving plate and spread with a little of the filling. Top with a second cake and repeat the method until all the cakes are stacked one on top of the other with the chocolate filling between the layers.

4. To make the glaze, melt the chocolate with the coconut oil or butter and coffee liqueur in a heat-proof basin over gently simmering water until smooth, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for a few minutes then spread with a large rubber spatula over the assembled cake. Decorate with chocolate shavings and chill until ready to serve.

Please note this recipe is the contestant's own and has not been tested professionally. Like the Come Dine With Me contestants, you could be creating a culinary delight or dining disaster, so switch on your ovens and be bold.

As a bonus I thought I'd include a recipe for Ratafia.

What is ratafia?

It is defined as "1- a sweet cordial flavored with fruit kernels or almonds. 2 - a biscuit flavored with ratafia."The following recipe for Ratafia can be found in Robert's Guide for Butlers & Other Household Staff, published in 1828.
Into one quart of brandy pour half a pint of cherry juice, as much currant juice, as much of raspberry juice, add a few cloves, and some white pepper in grains, two grains of green coriander, and a stick or two of cinnamon, then pound the stones of cherries, and put them in wood and all. Add about twenty five or thirty kernels of apricots. Stop your demijohn close and let it infuse for one month in the shade, shaking it five or six times in that time at the end of which strain it through a flannel bag, then through a filtering paper, and then bottle it and cork close for use; you can make any quantity you chose, only by adding or increasing more brandy or other ingredients.

Now for my giveaway~
All you have to do to enter my giveaway is to share your favourite recipe and I will use random.org to pick a lucky recipient.
