Sunday Snippet

This week's snippet is my last from my first Regency novel,
No Job For a Woman
(now available online for the special price of $2.99)

“If she will not see sense we are done for. And I cannot imagine where we will find a suitable groom in time who she will accept.” His glance leveled on his friend’s disbelieving face.

“You’ve said it yourself, Deborah has no intention of wedding again,” Julian snapped. “Why should I leg-shackle myself to a woman who’s loyalty is with her late husband’s estates and people? You said she and Harold were married for eight years and they have no children. Why should I hitch myself to a woman who may be infertile?

Snippet Sunday 23-03-14

This week's snippet is from my first Regency novel,
No Job For a Woman
(now available online for the special price of $2.99)

“If we all turn up and start asking questions, it would get back to the Graingers. They may assume we know about their latest threat, but equally, they can’t be certain.”

Husband and wife waited when Julian paused.

“On consideration let me go alone tomorrow. I’ll tell Deborah you’ve invited her to spend next weekend with you, Henri, and if Brandon hears of the invitation, there’s little he can make of it.”

“Why would you go, and not me?”

“Because you want to spend time alone with your wife before Clara returns from visiting her aunt in Leicestershire. And—,” he added, “I think Deborah may not be so resistant if the information and conclusions we have reached come from me rather than you.”

“What has happened to create the fear, are you saying the Grangers are intimidating Deborah’s estate manager, too? How could they? I mean, if they can do it now, why haven’t they tried it before?”
“I can’t remember where or when,” Henrietta intervened, “but I’m sure I heard Mrs. Granger’s took Brandon’s daughter on as her dresser a few months ago.”
“I wonder—” Julian looked up at Freddie, “how can we discover whether there’s been any contact between the Grangers and Brandon during your sister’s visit here?”
Unable to keep the tremble from her voice, Henrietta expressed her own fear. “Are you thinking they’re using the girl as some kind of hostage to force Brandon to do their bidding?”

“Let me recap.” Julian leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees, and propped his chin on his steepled fingers. "You say your sister’s turned Ned Granger down twice, and now he threatens to do something if she doesn’t change her mind?”
“In a word, yes.”
“And suddenly the cooperative Brandon has turned unhelpful?”
“I wouldn’t say so precisely.”
“Then what would you say.”
“Darn it man,” Freddie stormed, “I’m telling you I can’t put my finger on it!” He spun round challenge in his eyes then stopped, his mouth falling open. “Fear! The man’s afraid of something.”

My Five Favourite things

Secret and Sweet Cravings Publishing's authors have banded together in ths blog hop to share Five of their Favourite Things

There are lots of prizes/giveaways up for grabs :-)  All you have to do - is to leave a comment sharing your favourite thing(s), remember to include your email contact address, to be in with a chance of winning!  Simple!

So, what are five of my favourite things?

1) Watching the sun rise, and set, watching the stars at night, been delighted with the display of meteor showers going on these last few days :-)

2) The treasures of friendship.

3) Family, immediate and extended.

4) My pets, past and present.  Some may be gone but their memory continues.

5) Writing, and reading. Yes, both transport me to places I've longed to visit, and both introduce me to some fabulous characters :-)

I've shared my heroine's life and adventures for several years before I submitted and Sweet Cravings Publishings accepted No Job For a Woman, and over that time I watched her live evolve, change, shift and coalesce until it came true in Deborah's story.
Blurb:
Julian Fanshaw answers a call for help from his life-long friend Lord Worth to help keep his friend’s widowed sister, Deborah, safe from her increasingly vindictive neighbours. It doesn’t take long to realise him or Freddie long to realise the Grangers aren’t using her as a long-promised act of revenge against them; but are playing a deeper and far more sinister game of their own.

Deborah Stavely is determined to overcome the increasing harassment from her neighbour without calling on her brother for help. So she is not pleased when Freddie intervenes and involves his friend, Julian Fanshaw.

Circumstances demand Julian and Deborah learn to work together and Julian dares to dream that he might gain the love of the only person he’s ever given his heart to.

But will Deborah live long enough to discover that by releasing everything she values, she will gain everything her heart desires?

Combination Blog Hop

Why have I named this a 'combination blog hop'?  Because a combination of wonderful authors have got together to celebrate through Black friday to Cyber Monday.

Now being a Brit, I've heard of Black Friday, but Cyber Monday is a new one for me.

So, anyone who leaves a comment explaining the meaning of Cyber Monday to me will be in for a chance a PDF copy of my Regency Romance, No Job For a Woman, published by Sweet Cravings Publishings.

No Job For a Woman began with a single word - forfiet -  and took several years to write, and then re-write.

I asked myself what would happen to the characters in a story if one of them had their home , in modern terms,'reposessed?'

Then I asked myself what would happen if the owners of that property had something to hide that would effect the outcome of that reposession?

That question was followed by another.  What impact would those events and lies have on my heroine and hero?

Especially if the heroine is fiesty, independent and unwilling to accept help. As for my hero?  Well he's retired, injured, from Wellington's army in the Peninsula and therefore used to being in command of many men, and used to being obeyed.

If you want to find out what happens when these two meet then please either

Here is
 a short excerpt from
No Job for a Woman.

Excerpt:

Julian Fanshaw ignored the other letters in front of him when he recognized one from his long-time friend Freddie Dalrymple, now Lord Worth. He broke the seal and scanned the single sheet with growing concern.
Julian, my friend, I am writing to implore you to put aside whatever plans you have in hand and to set out immediately to stay with us for an indeterminate period of time.
Thoroughly alarmed, Julian flipped the page in his hand to discover it had been dispatched more than a week ago.
If I bring to mind a certain student up at Oxford with us, and reveal that he and his wife are, and have been, my sister’s neighbors for several years, it will give you but an inkling of the root of my concern.
It has come to my attention, due to the arrival of his brother upon the scene, and recent events concerning my sister, Deborah, I am persuaded you need not only to know what is happening here, but be on hand to assist in circumventing any consequences of actions taken against her.
I have taken the liberty of gathering some friends together for a couple of shooting parties, thereby creating a reason for your presence.
Since his return from the Peninsular, Julian kept promising himself a trip to Worth’s Norfolk estate. Unfortunately in the last eighteen months, time and circumstances had worked against him.
Casting the letter aside, Julian strode to the door and called for his butler.
“I am leaving immediately for Norfolk. Please see that my bags are packed and have my horse ready within the hour.”
“You do not intend to use your chaise, sir?”
“No. I’ll ride, with a stop to visit Mr. Sewel. Arrange for Becket and French to follow me in the chaise with everything I’ll need for a month.”
Not by so much as a flick of an eyelid did Thomas reveal he recognized the name of his master’s man of business.
“Very good, sir.”

A Tuesday Taster

Today I'm offering another snippet from my latest release, and first Regency Romance, No Job For A Woman, and would love to hear your comments.

The shiver running up her spine owed nothing to the light spring breeze and everything to the memory of the gruesome tale she’d overheard one of her workers relating to another.

“Found ‘er in the river, they did.”

Thinking the men spoke of one of her cattle she’d moved forward, only to stop at the man’s next words.

“They do say as ‘ow ‘e killed ‘er and threw ‘er body over the side of the bridge, they do.”

“I heard tell Ned Granger never denied it.”

She recognized her foreman’s voice.

“Some even claimed he enjoyed the infamy of it all.”

“’e would too.”

Whether she made some sound or not, she’d never know when the men spun round, spotted her presence, and after doffing their caps moved away, still talking in low voices.

Now after the discussion and revelations of the night before, she gave careful consideration to her fears. Was it possible Harold’s death may not have been the accident the coroner claimed? Certainly she’d given it thought a few days ago but dismissed it as far-fetched. Now? Now she hated the thought her fears may be justified. Too many emotions to identify churned, coalesced, and gnawed at her gut.

As always, thanks to everyone who comes by I always appreciate your comments. :-)

Sweet Saturday Samples brings an end to a very exciting week, when my first Regency Romance Novel released on 31st August.  So today I am sharing the prologue from No Job For A Woman ~

Prologue:

Julian Fanshaw ignored the other letters in front of him when he recognized one from his long-time friend Freddie Dalrymple, now Lord Worth. He broke the seal and scanned the single sheet with growing concern.

SIx Sentence Sunday

It's good to be back for SSS and this week I am sharing 6 sentences from my recently accepted Regency romance No Job For a Woman.

Julian Fanshaw ignored the other letters in front of him when he recognized one from his long-time friend Freddie Dalrymple, now Lord Worth. He broke the seal and scanned the single sheet with growing concern.

Six Sunday Sentence

Six Sentence Sunday

After having my head stuck in finishing this Regency romance, I'm back and offering you six more sentences while it is now away househunting.
Thank you to everyone who's visited in the past, I hope I'll see you again.

When his new wife had left him the night before, he’d returned downstairs to find Freddie waiting for him in the library with a glass of brandy in his hand. “She is willing to accept the tale we concocted?”

“Yes, she is.” They’d talked of many things well into the night and separated with the shared satisfaction that they’d achieved a job well done.

Now he watched the woman beside him meld with her horse as the wind caught her hair and tugged it out of the knot she’d created at her neck. “This is what being alive is all about,” she cried, her eyes brighter than he’d ever seen them and he could not doubt her as the ground beneath them slipped away.

A-Z Challenge Day 3 - C

C is today's letter, and my chosen word is
Conversation

Conversations, they are everywhere you go, everywhere you are, even when you are alone. If you stop for a moment and listen youu will become aware of the internal voice chattering away in your head, telling you what to do, what to think and how to react.

And it is the reaction to a conversation I want to talk about today.
Yesterday, while I was waiting in a long queue at the post office there was a father and young daughter in front of me.

The father's phone rang, he listened, muttered something brief and disconnected. The child was swinging on one of the 'bollards' holding the queue-rope in place, and after a moment, while still swinging, she looked at her Dad and said, "What did she want?"

I was surprised at the strength of mutiny in her voice.

I didn't hear the father's response as he'd turned his back on me.

"She always wants money." She stopped swinging and held her father's attention before challenging, "You always give her money when she asks for it, why don't you ever give me any money?"
At that, and not waiting or expecting a response, she resumed her swinging.

As an author my mind went into overdrive, the annoyance of the long queue ahead of me became a blessing while I played with the mulititude of computation I could generate from what I overheard, expecting to use it in one of my current WIP, two novellas.

Instead, this morning, it came to me I could turn this conversation around, tweak it, play with it, and use iit to wrap up my experimental Regency, No Job For a Woman, that has been on the go for nearly two years.

My thanks to father, especially his daughter, and the unknown caller who gave me the 'tool' to use in finishing my story.

There are nearly 1700 participants this year and you'll find a list HERE
