I am continuing from where I left of last week, and - because I'm aiming for speed here, my 'paragraphs are very short so I am cheating a teeny bit so the action makes sense.
This woman was enticing him to risk a pass on her lunge.  To do that would dismiss his height advantage. Not that his height gave him anything more than a split second of time.

She lunged again, moved to his left, to his right and stepped forward.

Snippet Sunday - 24-02-13

Thank you to everyone who visited last week and to those who left comments. Your thoughts are always appreciated.

For this week's Sunday Snippet I'm continuing from where  I left off last week.

He braked to a halt, hauled in a deep breath and eased out of his car. Shock had drained all colour from the farmer’s face where he stood leaning against the huge back wheel of the tractor and staring into the car-wreck. Another man was puking at the curb-side and another, his shoulders heaving, stood with his hands clamped to what had been an open front window

Jim didn’t want to know, and couldn’t fight the urge, the gut instinct that told him he needed to know. Without conscious thought he dugout his mobile and dialled 999.  He doubted anyone else had, unless the drivers in the cars queuing up on the other side of the pile-up had done so. With an unreal sense of detachment enveloping him, Jim looked back, noted several cars had pulled up behind his own vehicle and that no one had attempted to get out.

He couldn’t blame them. They, unlike himself, would have no reason. They hadn’t seen the car shoot past him on a blind bend, hadn’t recognised it, didn’t know the female driver.

That's it for this week, :-) Thanks for coming by and you'll find lots more free-read snippets at Snippet Sunday

Sweet Saturday Sample 23-02-13

Time for Sweet Saturday Sample again, and this week I'm continuing in His Chosen Bride, from where I left off a couple of week's ago.

Not only do you get Henri's reaaction to the King's edict, but you will meet/become reacquainted with his youngest brother, Liam and his wife Melanie from From Now Until Forever, book one of The Gasquet Princes series.
I appreciate your company and would love your feedback. :-)

              Feeling like a recalcitrant four-year-old, Henri recognised that tone of voice now and sighed. A lenient parent in most things, there were times when his father’s tone brooked no argument. This was one of them, Henri acknowledged.
“What am I supposed to do?” For the life of him, he failed to conceal his sarcasm. “Twiddle my thumbs? And for how long?”
“Until I say otherwise.” A beam of sunlight transformed the king’s thatch of grey hair to silver. His eyes conveyed simultaneous messages of understanding and determination. He rose and rounded his desk. Resting his hand on Henri’s shoulder, his tone gentled. “Get away, right away, and relax. Do you suppose I’ve found it easy to watch you running yourself into the ground in your efforts to combine your schedule with mine? And now—? Now,” he paused, waiting for a reaction Henri swallowed before continuing. “Now it is time for me to take up the reins again.
"The plane is waiting to take you to Scotland. Melanie and Liam hope you will remain with them for a couple of months at least, until you are fully rested."
As you can imagine, Henri is not pleased with the outcome of his interview with his father.
There are many more wonderful reads at Sweet Saturday Sample

And while the foil points may be protected, Simeon had no intention of allowing this woman to best him.
Her lunge pierced his waving concentration and he almost failed to close in time, and countered with a tempo that forced them to circle once more.
The sound of steel sliding along steel shimmered in the air, cut through the ring of clashing blades. He saw it now— her strategy.

Tuesday's Tales - 19th feb

Working to this week's Tuesday's Tales prompt of 'Spider,' I am continuing with a short snippet from another piece of my current WIP

She shouldn’t have walked out in a temper like that. Ha!  When did she ever listen to good advice? Even when it was her own advice?

She’d taken her tantrum, for that was what it was, out on her loving parents. Said some unforgivable things to them, and rushed from the house without a cardigan, let alone a jacket.  It wasn’t their fault her boyfriend had changed his allegiance so abruptly.

She studied the rain running down the cave walls; well, hardly a cave, more like a scrape in the rocky hillside, and wondered when the rain would stop.  Wondered when the throbbing pain in her twisted ankle would subside enough for her to retrace her steps back home.

Her parents would ground her for a week. And who could blame them? She’d been devastated after Tyler dumped her in favour of the newest recruit in the ‘meals-on-wheels’ team.

No not those members of the Women’s Guild, or whatever they were, that went out delivering meals to the needy folk who couldn’t get about any more.  No, their teachers had signed them up for work experience helping volunteers deliver meals to patients in hospital.

A movement in the cave entrance caught her attention.  A spider scurried round its web every time a rain drop landed on it. Poor spider, she thought, fooled by the rain, just the same way she’d been fooled by Tyler.

Perhaps he’d come looking for her. Her heart thudded in anticipation then resettled at its normal pace. Of course he wouldn’t.  Why would he tell her parents he wanted to speak to her?  The newbie, what was her name… Rachel, had made a point of telling her Tyler asked her to pass on his message…

The scumbag couldn’t even tell her to her face he was dumping her.  Well thanks to the industrious spider, which had extended its web almost across the whole entrance of her shelter, anyone passing by could be forgiven for thinking there’d be no one beyond the web and not take time out to search the area.

Perversely she welcomed the seclusion, but as the rain continued to fall and water seeped over the floor and ran in rivulets around where she sat, her stubbornness melted into anxiety

Who, she wondered, using anger to try and force her rising fear away, had killed a spider?  Didn’t they know that if you killed a spider it would rain?  Whoever it was must have killed millions of them, the rain was falling so hard now she couldn’t see past the wall of water beyond the cave entrance.

Please visit the rest of this week's Tuesday's Tales

Today, Brenda has chosen to interview Emili Jones, her main character of The Lance Temptation.
Give us a few brief facts about yourself.My name is Emili Jones. I’m sixteen years old and a sophomore at Bates Academy.
Is Bates a private school?Yes. I’ve gone there forever. All my friends are there.
Who’s your best friend?Right now, my best friend is Farah Menins. She’s gorgeous and all the guys like her.
And how about you? Are you popular with the guys?Not so much. I figured if I hung out with Farah, it might help me get more popular.
Did it work?
I managed to snag one guy all on my own. His name is Marc and he’s really nice. You know, a sweet guy. But there’s this new guy at school named Lance, and I start sweating the minute I look at him. He’s fine. But I don’t think he’d ever look twice at me.
What’s your favorite thing to do?
I make perfume. It can get kind of spendy though.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?Is it okay if I don’t really answer that? It’s embarrassing and I’m still mad at myself. I will say this—it had to do with Marc.
What do you wish you could do over?Wow. There are a couple major things. I dumped my friend Jeannie, and sometimes I regret it. Especially because of the reason why I dumped her. The other thing is the same as the last question you asked. It’s about Marc.
What’s hardest about being a teen in today’s world?The pressure on you to be hot and smart and beautiful and popular. It’s impossible. Who could live up to that? Well, maybe Farah.  But the pressure makes you do stupid things. Even when you try not to be an idiot, you end up doing things you know you shouldn’t.
What are your future plans?Hmmm, I’m only a sophomore so I’m not sure. I want to graduate from Bates and go to university. I’m worried, though, because something’s going on with my dad.  He has some big announcement, and I can tell by the look on his face I’m not going to like it.
I hope the announcement isn’t too awful. It was nice talking with you today, Emili. All of us can read about your story in The Lance Temptation, correct.Yep. Thanks for talking with me. It was nice to be here.

Excerpt from The Lance Temptation (Book One of The Edgemont Collection):
Farah carried her tray with its plate of green beans as if it were the royal jewels. She sashayed toward our regular table in the corner of the cafeteria, her hips lightly brushing the backs of the entire high school football team who’d already grabbed the table in the nearest the food. The catcalls began immediately.
“Hot stuff,” one player yelled, and then whistled.
With practiced innocence, Farah paused, and turned to face the guys. She rolled her green eyes and shook her head, feigning annoyance. A smile played on her lips. Then she fluttered her thick lashes and continued on, skirting her way to our table in the back.
Oh yeah, she’s a master at everything I’m not. All Farah has to do is show up and the boys follow, frolicking like puppies around a bone. So, shameful as it sounds—I made it my business to become her friend, even if it meant dropping everyone in my tight circle. I was done being the boring, straight A girl. I wanted the hot guys to drool around me for once, and I figured the connection couldn’t hurt.
Watch and learn, Farah had said. Right.
I stood with my tuna sandwich stuffed inside my crumpled lunch sack, sighed heavily and followed her, trying not to let my shoes clack out my progress. Nobody’s eyes followed my every move.
Well, there’s a surprise.
I slid onto the bench across from her. It was Monday—the only day Farah’s halfway civilized because she’s tired from the weekend—and we were eating lunch together as usual.
Farah opened her milk carton, and took a drink. She tipped her head, letting her thick red hair cascade down her back. The loose curls nearly touched her waist. Farah’s well aware how flat-out gorgeous she is, and she quickly glanced around to see who might be watching.
The table of girls to the side of us stared at her. When they spotted me looking at them, they huddled together in one big gossip head. Farah saw them laughing, pointing, and whispering. Her expression hardened. “What a bunch of wannabe’s.”
“They’re jealous,” I said.
Farah leaned across the end of our table toward them. “Talk about me all you want, you sad groupies.”
Their heads jerked apart and each one of them glared at her. Farah scowled, and then turned her attention back to me.
I heard a yelp behind me, and someone hollered, “You’re disgusting!” A burst of raucous laughter filled the air. I could see Farah watching the whole scene over my shoulder. Wide-eyed, she jumped from her seat and flew to a table of freshmen girls. I swirled around to observe. Farah lunged across their strewn trays and stuck her face against a shocked girl’s nose. “Leave her alone! Do it again, and you’ll deal with me.”
Her harsh voice echoed across the cafeteria. The freshmen girls were shocked into silence, but their lips fairly curled into snarls.
A choked sniffle came from a girl cowering at the end of the table. Macaroni was splattered all over her uniform. Farah stood up to her full height, her cheeks blotched red. She regarded the sniveling girl. “You okay?”
There was no answer.
“Want help cleaning up?”
The girl shook her head, picked up a napkin, and started wiping at her shirt.
Farah squared her shoulders and returned to our table. I stared at her. “What was that?”
“Bullies. I hate them. And where are the lunch monitors, anyway?” She picked up her fork and took a bite of green beans.
“You know, sometimes you’re actually nice.”
Farah grimaced. “Don’t let it get around.”
I laughed and picked up my sandwich. Right then a tender feeling of protectiveness toward Farah washed over me.
And that’s when he descended upon our table. The New Guy. The one I’d secretly been panting after since he transferred to our school two weeks earlier.

Snippet Sunday - 17-02-13

Alas, Valentine's day has come and gone, and accident prone, amibitious Cupids have no place here for another year :-( So today I am going to share a Sunday Snippet from my current WIP. The Magpie Chronicles and other Stories.
This week's six just happens to come from one of the 'other stories'! LOL

Not everyone believes a black cat is lucky. Now where did that thought come from, Jim wondered, scoffing at the thought he could almost hear the voice in his head.

A vague memory of a friend’s serious voice going on about his American friend’s unhealthy obsession with the belief black cats were unlucky and wouldn’t go anywhere near one, and refused to allow his children to bring a black cat home from the sanctuary. And what about the Germans? Why was he even giving these thoughts headroom, Jim wondered, and thumped his hand on the steering wheel as a snazzy white sports car shot past him and vanished round a sharp bend in the road.

Automatically he reduced his speed, unsurprised when he rounded the corner to find the sports car, its roof sheared off, stuck beneath a long trailer being pulled by a farm tractor.

Please welcome author Tanya Eavenson

Please give a warm welcome to fellow Astrea Press author, Tanya Eavenson.
About the author:
Tanya Eavenson and her husband have been involved in ministry for fifteen years teaching youth and adults, and doing counseling. Tanya enjoys spending time with her husband, and their three children. Her favorite pastime is grabbing a cup of coffee and reading a good book. Tanya is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and writes for Christ to the World Ministries sharing the Gospel around the world.

Blurb for Unconditional:
He will fight for her at any cost...
Elizabeth Roberts can't remember her past, and the present is too painful. She turns to nightclubs and drinking to forget her infant daughter's death, her husband's affair.

When his wife's coma wiped out the memory of their marriage, Chris Roberts found comfort elsewhere. He can't erase his betrayal, but with God's help he’s determined to fight for Elizabeth at any cost.

She wants to forget. He wants to save his marriage. Can they trust God with their future and find a love that’s unconditional?
~~~~
Tanya, I believe Elizabeth agreed to be interviewed? Please will you share it with us?
Tanya - 1. Elizabeth, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
The most interesting thing about me is that I can’t remember my past. No matter how hard I try.
2. Wow, that must be tough, and frustrating. How do you cope? What kinds of things do you do for fun?
Chris and I go fishing—when I don’t throw my rod in the lake and cause him to jump in after it. That was a day, I can tell you!
3. I can imagine! And I certainly do want to hear that story some time, but first, tell me, what do you put off doing because you dread it?
I dread dealing with problems. We all have to deal with things at some point, but I choose to ignore things instead. Maybe that’s the cause of the tension between Chris and me? I awoke from a coma and everything changed, but I’m taking one day at a time. I think it’s all I can do right now.
4. What do you most fear?
I wish I could say something easy, but my daughter stopped breathing the other day, and it really scared me. Chris wasn’t concerned and that made me doubt myself. What if there is something wrong with her? Maybe I didn’t see what I saw. Maybe he’s right; I’m too worried about things.
5. I can understand your concern. Parenting newborns can be so frightening! Besides being a parent, what do you want out of life?
To remember my past with my husband. I believe things would be different without my accident. I’d have a happy marriage and a healthy daughter. What’s wrong with wanting that happily-ever-after I’ve read about? But it seems it’s only real in fairy tales.
6. What is the most important thing in your life?
My daughter. I know I shouldn’t put her before God. My head knows this, but my heart disagrees. Where was God when I awoke with no memory of my past life? My husband was a stranger, but somehow I knew Katherine was my daughter. I knew it the moment I held her.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
Oh, my! Yes, I love to read! Owning a bookstore I can’t help myself. My favorite book is The Wizard of Oz, or so I’m told. And the classics, more than anything else.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Ttrust God and my husband. I wish I could explain it, but I don’t understand it myself. I feel the need to trust, but it’s that head and heart issue again.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it, and why that pet?
I’d love to have a pet, but with Katherine, I’ll have to wait until she’s older. It might have to be something small since she’s an infant. Maybe once we figure out what’s going on with Katherine. If there really is anything wrong.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
To the time of my accident. I would have disregarded the doctor and stayed on bed rest and not have gone to the wedding. If I hadn’t fallen from the steps, things would be different now.
Thank you for sharing this enlightening interview with us Tanya. Would you like to share an excerpt from Unconditional with us?
Excerpt from Chapter One:
Elizabeth pushed herself up from the bed. Her gaze swept the dark room and fixed on the hall nightlight. Her hand grazed over her husband’s shoulder when a thought gripped her. Katherine. The baby monitor stood silent. Darkness shrouded the red and green lights that indicated movement.
Her chest tightened. She hurled the covers away and leapt to the floor. Panic made her clumsy as she rushed to her daughter’s room. She lunged over the crib. No sound. No movement. Not even a stirring of air from her tiny nostrils.
“Katherine!” Elizabeth snatched her daughter from the mattress. The infant drew a heavy breath as her eyes flung wide open.
Lord, what’s happening?
Elizabeth’s bare feet pounded the cold tile as she ran back to her husband. “Chris, wake up! Katherine quit breathing again!”
Chris rubbed his eyes and scowled. “What is it?”
“We need to take Katherine to the hospital. She stopped breathing.”
He studied their child. “She seems to be breathing now. Are you sure?”
“Of course, I’m sure.”
“She’s fine.” Chris fell back against the pillow.
“Please—”
“We don’t have the money to take her to the hospital when there’s nothing wrong with her.”
“But there is. She stopped breathing.”
He sat back up. “You’ve been worried about her since before she was born. You’re all worked up because she hasn’t rolled over yet. The doctor said that’s normal for being early.”
She’s called a preemie. She glared into his eyes. “If you were home more often you’d know she’s not fine.”
“I’m home, Elizabeth, and she’s fine.”
Heat flushed her cheeks as tears filled her eyes. “I’m scared. Can’t you see that? I need you to pray for our daughter. I need you to hold me and tell me everything will be all right.”
“Look, she’s sleeping.” His voice softened as his hand ran down her thigh. “Come to bed.”
“How can you care so little? I’m worried about our baby.”
Chris’s hand dropped to the sheets. “Shut the door when you leave.” He turned away from her.
Elizabeth stood for a moment unable to speak. With their baby in her arms, she slowly closed the door behind her and sank her teeth into her lip to keep from crying. If tears came, it would be for her daughter, not for the stranger in her bed.
My review of Unconditional --
There are few authors who burst upon publishing scene with immediate impact, but Tanya Eavenson is one of them. Her debut inspirational novel, Unconditional, published by Astraea Press is hard hitting, deep, intense and in equal measure heart wrenching and heart-warming.
Ms. Eavenson has tackled the subject of infant death. Her heroine's daughter, Katherine has breathing problems and for reasons that become clear in the book, on this occasion when Elizabeth, without the support of her husband Chris, rushes Katherine to hospital there is nothing the doctor can do to save her.
As if that is not tragic enough Ms. Eavenson unfolds Elizabeth’s back-story in way that makes it clear that the doctor in question knows more about Elizabeth’s past than she does. So now Elizabeth finds herself with dilemma upon dilemma to deal with, including the betrayal of her husband.
If that seems complex, then believe me, it is the skill of the author that kept this reader engaged to the last page.
Every member of Ms. Eavenson’s cast has an integral part to play and all face with issues that challenges their faith. They are immediately identifiable with, and real.
Her scene setting is so vivid I almost felt like a fly on Elizabeth’s coat, never mind her walls.
If you enjoy tense, edge of the seat stories, then Unconditional fits the bill.
If you enjoy inspirational romance novels, then take a look at Unconditional.
If you are on the lookout for a new author who writes tight, tense, and inspirational stories then follow her link and add it to your ‘must buy’ list.
Hump Day Hook ~ 13-02-13
HUMP DAY HOOK is a blog hop where each participating author posts ONE paragraph from a WIP (work in progress) or finished book each Wednesday. This gives readers an opportunity to sample different author's work and perhaps even find a new-to-you author.
In this week's offering for Hump Day Hook is from Simeon's Story follows on from last week (working title) that will be book three or four in my Gasquet Princes series.
In this scene Simeon has met a woman, who's dualing skills match his own.
The skill she’d displayed so far discounted any hope she’d charge at his manhood. No, she’d not risk leaving herself open to the obvious retaliation such a charge would engender.
He circled, watching her back foot, weighing his options, always maintaining the straight line between them.
The circle widened.
He waited— knowing neither could lunge until they closed in again. Not unless they wanted their opponent’s point in their chest
Tuesday's Tale - Picture prompt
The Tuesday's Tale picture prompt this month is so fitting for valentine's Day I decided to have a little poke at 'expectations'.  I have kept it beneath the 300 word limit ;-) (This is a short one-off story, quite unrelated to my current wip that I have been posting recently.)
She looked at the box, then at the man, and her heart turned over in her chest. Love, as warm and red as the gift-wrapping, and as bright as the silver ribbon, neatly topping it with a tidy bow, blazed in his eyes.
Could you fall in love at first sight? It felt like it to her, but could she trust the emotions swirling inside her?
The glow in his eyes dimmed, and her heart squeezed.
Two days, that’s all. They’d known each other for two days.
And in those two days, life had been full; wonderful, and filled with meaning… and joy.
Could she dismiss the magic they generated when they were together so causally? Should she?
She stared back at the box, then up at the man again.
The sound of waves lapping against the sun-kissed shore beat a gentle rhythm in her head. His hair the colour of a setting sun, and his eyes, she noticed again, were as blue as the summer sky. The glow in them had changed-to determination.
She half wished he’d coax her to take the box, but he remained silent, as still as a statue apart from his watchful gaze on her face.
Without warning the image of a door closing filled her mind.
No!
No, she refused to let the door close and snatched the gift out of his cupped hands.
Unaware of the breath backing up in her lungs, she tore at the wrapping and snapped up the lid and stared. A plastic bubblegum-pink ring lay on a black velvet bed.
With a gurgle of laughter, she lifted the ring from the box and handed it to him and watched him slide it on her finger.
“Just stating my intent,” he said, and drew her in for a kiss.
Celebrating St Valentine Blog-Hop
Share a Valentine’s Day moment!
I'd like to share a pre-Valentine moment experienced by my hero and heroine in my Valentine Rom Com, The Wrong Target.
“Goddamit,” he exploded, “Can’t you stand still for one second? I have something to say, but I can’t while you’re jogging round the room.”
She halted toe to toe in front of him. “You have me dismissed from a job I loved, because I upheld the safety of my pupils, and still have the audacity to stalk me to my holiday destination and demand I listen to you because you have something to say?” Flapping her hands at her sides, she spun away and back again, planting her hands on the chair arms, she pinned him in his place and snarled, “Let me tell you something. I’ve come here to enjoy myself and your presence isn’t part of my plan.”
“What is your plan?” he demanded.
“To get laid!” Astonishment pushed her away from the chair, her eyes wide, her lips curved up in a defiant sneer. “I intend to find myself a man and screw the living daylights out of him. And,” she paused deliberately, “I don’t need you for that.”
The image of Tina Blackberry beneath another man blasted his good intentions out the window. He shot to his feet and swung her round to face him. “If you want a man, there’s one more than willing standing right in front of you,” he growled and then took her lips in a punishing kiss.
