Six Sentence Sunday

It is a while since I participated in Six Sentence Sunday, but today I'm carrying on from yesterday's post and offering more from my latest release by Astraea Press, Vidal's Honor.

“You—!” Honor remembered to lower her voice and started again. “Are you implying we are going to ride through the water?” Consuela, she noted, didn’t appear any more pleased with this plan than she did. “But it is dark, what if we slip and fall?”
“What if those behind us catch up?” Juan snapped back, his patience dwindling.

“We?”

“I am coming with you.

Six Sentence Sunday

Today's six sentences follows on from yesterday's sample from my current WIP, which now has a name!  Vidal's Honor.

Thanks for your visits and support, they're all appreciated :-)

“Those men ambushed your husband in the open. To do that they had to assume they were invincible. That means they not only knew he was more than a scout for Lord Wellington, but they knew his orders for that day, which means Napoleon had an agent in the camp, someone close to your commander in chief.

“When Wellington routed Marmont at Arapiles those men probably slipped away without detection during the various conflicts or even when Wellington chased Marmont’s retreating troops hoping their disappearance will become just another statistic of any battle casualties.”

Spies? And counter spies and agents?

And her wonderful Dev, the man who loved her so tenderly, protected her so strongly, and danced with her in the moonlight only hours after their wedding had been a spy?

Six Sentence Sunday

My six this week come from my Regency WIP.

Mist, rising from the Thames swirled round their feet, while a brisk, dank wind blew any remaining alcoholic from their brains. The call of a distant night watchman informed anyone who cared to listen, that the early morning had advanced two hours beyond midnight. Vidal drew out his watch and confirmed the time as they walked in silence for several minutes.

“What ails you?” Vidal didn’t waste time in skirting round the situation. Dundas would not have invited his company at this time of night for simple pleasure.

SIx Sentence Sunday

It's good to be back for SSS and this week I am sharing 6 sentences from my recently accepted Regency romance No Job For a Woman.

Julian Fanshaw ignored the other letters in front of him when he recognized one from his long-time friend Freddie Dalrymple, now Lord Worth. He broke the seal and scanned the single sheet with growing concern.

‘Julian, my friend, I am writing to implore you to put aside whatever plans you have in hand and to set out immediately to stay with us for an indeterminate period of time.’

Thoroughly alarmed, Julian flipped the page in his hand to discover it had been dispatched more than a week ago.

‘If I bring to mind a certain student up at Oxford with us, and reveal he, and his wife, are and have been my sister’s neighbors for several years, it will give you but an inkling of the root of my concern.

‘It has come to my attention, due to the arrival of his brother upon the scene, and recent events concerning my sister, Deborah, I am persuaded you need not only to know what is happening here, but be on hand to assist in circumventing any consequences of actions taken against her.

Six Sentence Sunday

Last Sunday came and went almost before I realised it, and far ro quickly for me to cath it by the tale, so today I an offering you six sentences from a new WIP - from the third book in the Gasquet Princes Series.

Quickly knowing how much she’d embarrass him if she held onto him any longer than a couple of seconds, Rosie moved back and made a play of studying herself in the mirror.

“I lack the crown, don’t you think?” Angling her head from side to side, she met her son’s reflected grin in the mirror.

“You don’t need a crown when you wear that dress.”

The floor length pleated skirt of her diamond blue satin gown billowed round her legs when she turned. She still wasn’t sure about the single flowered strap that led the eye to the snug fitting bodice hugging her curves and emphasizing her slender waist, but had to agree it looked good on her.             Lots more SIX Sentence Sunday orrerings HERE

Six Sunday Sentence

Six Sentence Sunday

After having my head stuck in finishing this Regency romance, I'm back and offering you six more sentences while it is now away househunting.
Thank you to everyone who's visited in the past, I hope I'll see you again.

When his new wife had left him the night before, he’d returned downstairs to find Freddie waiting for him in the library with a glass of brandy in his hand. “She is willing to accept the tale we concocted?”

“Yes, she is.” They’d talked of many things well into the night and separated with the shared satisfaction that they’d achieved a job well done.

Now he watched the woman beside him meld with her horse as the wind caught her hair and tugged it out of the knot she’d created at her neck. “This is what being alive is all about,” she cried, her eyes brighter than he’d ever seen them and he could not doubt her as the ground beneath them slipped away.

Six Sentence Sunday

Today's Six Setences this Sunday  follows on from yesterday's sample and is from my 'experimental' Regency romance No job For a Woman.
Thanks to everyone who visits and to those who stop long enough to leave comments.  You're all appreciated :-)

“I blame myself.” Freddie looked from his sister's worried face to his friend’s inert body on the bed.

As soon as her envoy reached him, Freddie sent several of his men over to help patrol her lands. Not that they could do much if Ned and his brother followed through on their threat of more attacks.

The news of Deborah's marriage to Julian had spread abroad, and Ned could no longer coerce her to wed him but she wished she knew whether it may, or may not incite them to further violence.

Upon his arrival, an hour after the fired was doused, the constable and his fellow officer followed Deborah into the drawing room and closed the door behind them.

Where has the week gone?  Here's another six sentences, from my my latest release, His Chosen Bride, for this week's SSS.
Thanks to everyone who passes by and to those who leave me comments.  I appreciate you all

Normally quiet-spoken, the snap in her voice startled him to immobility.

She stood back while he hefted the bale onto the high stack against the wall, and stuffed her hands into her jeans pockets. Judging from the glittering anger in her eyes, he reckoned she’d done that to prevent her fists from connecting with his chin.

Not just anger burning in her eyes, he decided, and gave in to his need to touch. He reached out, skimmed a knuckle down her cheek, and let his hand drift round to the back of her neck. His thumb traced the racing pulse at the base of her throat. So the lady was not as cool as she’d have him believe.

The Gasquet Princes ~ Book 2
It didn’t take Henri long to pick up Liam’s eagerness to share and explain his enthusiasm for the farm and training the horses used to help disabled children. He supposed that at some time he’d heard of such things, but as he watched Melanie, and occasionally Monica, working with them, their joy transmitted itself to him.

Several volunteers gave their time to the charity, but it was watching Monica working with the children that soothed his soul and taught him there was far more to life than the meetings, duty, and ceremonies he’d immersed himself in so far.

The children loved her. And she reciprocated the emotion. It flowed around the arena when she worked, echoed in the children’s laughter each time they achieved a new goal.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ 29th Jan

Thank you to everyone who leaves comments, and visits every week.

Today I am sharing more from of my Valentine Story about Henri Gasquet, hero in His Chosen Bride.

His father’s bald statement rocked Henri back on his heels. “You?”

“It is a year since my heart attack,” the king said again, “and for the most part I have accepted the dictates of my doctors and advisors, and am now taking a leaf out of my son’s book before my heir drops dead from physical and emotional exhaustion.”

With a snap the king closed Henri’s diary, leaned back in his chair. Instead of pushing it towards him, the king slipped the diary into one of the desk drawers his gaze still focussed on his son.

“So you, my son, are on leave until I say otherwise.”

Today I am sharing more from of my Valentine Story about Henri Gasquet, hero in His Chosen Bride.

He planted his knuckles on his father’s desk and leaned forward. “I can’t just take off and leave them all in the lurch.” He pushed away.  “It is ridiculous for you or anyone else to expect me to walk away from my duties. Who would take my place?” he challenged, knowing every project mentioned needed his influence and prestige to press the projects forward.

“I will.”

Six Sentence Sunday

Thank you to everyone who leaves comments, and visits every week.

Today I am sharing more from of my Valentine Story about the brother, Henri, of the hero, Liam, in my current novella, From Now Until Forever, published by Astraea Press.

“I have not been unaware of the burden you have carried since my heart attack a year ago. Combining your own commitments with those you took over while I recuperated would have felled a lesser man.”

Feeling the heat burn his cheeks, Henri shifted in his chair.

The past twelve months had been tough, and for the last six, his advisors almost competed with each other in counselling him to slow down unless he wanted to occupy his father’s hospital bed.

“I am also aware you have ignored their advice to cut back. So I am decreeing that of this moment you are on indeterminate leave of absence.”

Best wishes  for 2012 to you all.

Thank you to everyone who leaves comments, and visits every week.
What better way to start the New Year than to start with a new story? So  Today I am sharing the opening six lines of my Valentine Story about the brother of the hero in my current novella, From Now Until Forever, published by Astraea Press.

Henri Pierre Gasquet hesitated before knocking on his father’s office door. They’d shared breakfast together less than an hour ago and talked over many things, including Henri’s killer schedule for the next several months. The king had given no indication of the need for a formal meeting this morning. With a fatalistic shrug, he knocked, waited a second, then turned the handle and entered the room.

“You wanted to see me?”
Henri waited for his father to indicate he sit before dropping into the chair in front of the king’s desk.

“Won’t it be easier if I sit at the table?”
“Our assailants may have left someone behind to watch this place. I see no point in making ourselves easy targets for our uninvited visitors.” Gently, she removed the bloodied cloth he’d pressed against his arm. “Let’s look at your wound,” she added, pushing forward onto her knees. She curled her tongue round her upper lip in a way so familiar, his love for her swamped him, leaving only wonder he’d found the other half of himself.

“How am I supposed to keep the prince here?” Melanie had asked her boss several months earlier.
“You do whatever it takes.”
His succinct reply left little room for interpretation, but she doubted he meant for her to tumble into love with the prince, let alone marry him.
By falling in love with and marrying Liam, she’d crossed the line from professional to personal.
Another mistake.

Six Sentence Sunday 6th Nov

As always, my thanks to everyone who stops by. I appreciate your company and your comments.
This week I am  posting six sentences from a Thanksgiving themed short story published a couple of years ago. Today's 'Six' is a continuation of yesterday's Sweet Saturday Sample

They’d met when he’d filled in when one of the regular photographers couldn’t make the shoot, and he'd not hidden his disdain. Why then had he asked her out for a drink afterwards? His broad shoulders, lean hips and tightly muscled body sent shivers up her spine every time she saw him and soon they became a couple. He filled her thoughts, and like a fool she’d dreamt of happy-ever-after. And then he’d met her twin, Alice. Before she could say ‘Boo-to-a-goose’, Alice had a ring on his finger and they’d left for America within a week of meeting.

As always, my thanks to all of you who stop by and read my efforts. I always appreciate your company.
This week, I'm taking a break from offering snippets from my current novel, Duty Calls, available in paperback, ebook formats, kindle and nook.
Instead here are the opening lines of my first short story, Precious Treasures, published in 2009 by LASR
(editied for SSS)

From beneath her colour co-ordinated lashes she studied her ex husband; he’d broadened out and toughened up, money did that to a man. The sensual lips narrowed in a line of discontent, and his grey eyes resembled ash-covered ice chips, his bronzed skin had darkened from his sojourn in the tropics. Building exclusive resorts in exotic locations. She’d followed his meteoric rise to fame and fortune in the media, unable to avoid the zillions of pictures of him with a different woman welded to his arm each time. The coverage rose exponentially with his wealth.

Finally, she got real and stopped looking.

“Widow? Cadmore never said anything about a wife. He introduced me to his sister. I told you he wagered his sister against my twenty thousand pounds.”

The remembered stench of the dingy room, stale beer, and dirty, sweaty bodies that fateful night pervaded Rafe’s memory. The single overhead bulb that failed to illuminate the far corners of the room hid the gray-faced stick of a woman who’d stepped forward when commanded.
