Sunday Snippet

This week's snippet is my last from my first Regency novel,
No Job For a Woman
(now available online for the special price of $2.99)

“If she will not see sense we are done for. And I cannot imagine where we will find a suitable groom in time who she will accept.” His glance leveled on his friend’s disbelieving face.

“You’ve said it yourself, Deborah has no intention of wedding again,” Julian snapped. “Why should I leg-shackle myself to a woman who’s loyalty is with her late husband’s estates and people? You said she and Harold were married for eight years and they have no children. Why should I hitch myself to a woman who may be infertile?

This week's snippet is from my first Regency novel,
No Job For a Woman
(now available online for the special price of $2.99)

“If we all turn up and start asking questions, it would get back to the Graingers. They may assume we know about their latest threat, but equally, they can’t be certain.”

Husband and wife waited when Julian paused.

“On consideration let me go alone tomorrow. I’ll tell Deborah you’ve invited her to spend next weekend with you, Henri, and if Brandon hears of the invitation, there’s little he can make of it.”

“Why would you go, and not me?”

“Because you want to spend time alone with your wife before Clara returns from visiting her aunt in Leicestershire. And—,” he added, “I think Deborah may not be so resistant if the information and conclusions we have reached come from me rather than you.”

Sunday Snipppet

Today I am sharing another snippet from my short Valentine story,
Queen of Diamonds,
which is part of a fifteen author
Astraea Press Anthology

After four months of denying it, she still risked losing her heart to a man she hardly knew. Where was the logic in that?

Nor was there any logic in the way the rest of the week flew by. Or that the usual mishaps when working with children never occurred. In fact they all went so smoothly, by Friday morning Sybil was a nervous wreck.

She woke to a dark pre-dawn sky heavy with the promise of rain and a coffee machine on the blink. Not to be denied her morning dose of caffeine, she set the kettle on the hob and prayed it wasn’t a premonition of things to come, and raced upstairs to take a shower.

Sunday Snippet

Happy first birthday to SnippetSunday :-)

The week's Sunday Snippet  is a continuation from last week's SS snippet, in my current WIP
Daily Mail

Her phone rang. Would this call reveal the first clue?
“Yes.”
“We’ve traced the father to a hotel in New York,” Sommers, her senior detective on her team, informed her.
“He’s still in the States?” Was that disappointment or relief surging through her, Rebecca wondered. While she’d hate for any family member to be involved, his absence from the scene focussed the attention back on Lucy Farraday.

SNIPPET SUNDAY
It's been a while since I last posted for SS, and today I'm offering a few lines from my latest wip. Jarrod has just asked Lacey to accompany him to a charity dinner being hosted by the Oscar winning actor Phineas Spencer at the weekend. He finds it hard to understand when she doesn't leap at the chance.

“You’re an enigma.”  Jarrod’s muttered comment wiped the smile from her face.
“I’m as straight and uncomplicated as an arrow.”
“I doubt the victim of any arrow considers it an uncomplicated weapon. You’re no weapon, nor are you uncomplicated.”
“If that’s how you feel about me, why are we here?” Was that a whine in her voice? When had she become so needy and whiney?
“Hey! Lady, I never intended any insult. You’re a strong woman, Lacey. I like that about you. But you have layers…”
“Everyone has layers.” Whine became defence and Lacey liked it even less.
‘When your father chucked you out of your home and out of your family.’ The thought almost rocked her off her seat.

Snippet Sunday

It's been a while since I took part in Snippet Sunday, and it's good to be back.

This week my snippet follows on from Yesterday's Saturday Sample (post below this one) and comes from Honor's Dilemma
(exclusively available from Astraea Press for $0.50c)

“I know.” He positioned himself between her and a couple who’d stopped dancing long enough to enquire if anything was amiss. After assuring them his partner was feeling a little faint and would be quite well in just a moment, Vidal waltzed her to the edge of the dance floor and guided her into a secluded corner. He looked across the room, met the concerned glance from Lady Adversane, and gave a slight shake of his head before persuading Honor to sit down.

Prior to sitting beside her, he handed her his large linen ‘kerchief. “I am sorry to upset you. But I wanted to tell you myself,” he repeated.

“How long have you known?” She let the anger rise, take over, and push away her shock. He could have told her before tonight, she was certain. No one left the country on such a whim as this, surely?

“Honor, I love you.”

She wanted to deny him, to disbelieve the words that would have thrilled her before they’d stood up for the waltz, but she heard the truth, heard his anguish, and pushed down her anger. This man she loved, who loved her in return, was hurting, too.  Hadn’t she always admired his strength? Both physically and emotionally? And why hadn’t she ever stopped to wonder how each man would react when she chose one over the other? Now, as she looked into Vidal’s eyes, she saw the truth. This wonderful man, acting from love, had taken the choice upon himself. He’d shifted the responsibility away from her. Never had she loved him more.

Snippet Sunday 14-04-13 WWW

Thank you to everyone who visited last week and to those who left comments. Your thoughts are always appreciated.
For today's Sunday Snippet I'm continuing where I left off two weeks ago, a little ways into the beginning of a new WIP (working title Horseshoe 1)  ** Sorry I missed last week.**

Again I don't have names for my characters at this stage hence the 'he' and 'she.'

This week I have joined the Weekend Writing Warriors  again.

“Freemont? Ashworthy?  There is no… what do you call it? real estate agency in town, because there is no town within a hundred mile radius of this property.  Indeed there is no town on this part of my kingdom, so you see you are not only an intruder, but a liar, too.”

His voice rang with an undisputable authority that almost fooled her.  Whatever he was on, the man was flying in delusions of grandeur.

“Real estate agency is the equivalent of the English estate agent,” she began.

“I know not what you are talking about, nor do I know of these people and places you mention. I am expecting guests for the weekend and see no evidence of any preparations for their arrival and comfort. I sent word with my agent—“ he offered her an evil grin of satisfaction, then continued. “My agent, unlike yours is known to me and has worked for my family as did his father and grandfather before him. I am not interested in your mythical agents. Be gone.”

“It is you who trespasses madam.” The hauteur in the intruder’s voice sent shivers down her spine. “This is my home, and I do not tolerate insubordination from my subjects, regardless of their beauty.”

What kind of pompous idiot talked like that?  “I don’t know what you’re on, but you’re obviously out of your tiny mind.  This—” she spun round, her arm outstretched to encompass the room and the rest of the building beyond it, “—is my home and has been for the last three years.”

When his cold, disbelieving eyes stared back at her she rushed on. “If you don’t believe me ask monsieur Freemont at Ashworthy’s real estate agency in town, I bought it from them."

“There’s bears and wolves in them there mountains,” the estate agent had prophesied with relish with so much relish when she paid her deposit, she’d wondered whether he was deliberately trying to scare her away.

Three years ago she’d lived another life. A life full of love and laughter, of friendships and happiness. It took her a while to find happiness here in her new home, but she’d found it. A quieter happiness, hopefully more enduring and one that would keep her grounded in reality. A happiness that never relied on others, and therefore could be snatched away from her.

Thank you to everyone who visited last week and to those who left comments. Your thoughts are always appreciated.

For today's Sunday Snippet I'm continuing from where I left off last week.
Swallowing against the bile threatening to choke him, Jim closed the distance and looked into the wrecked car.  The passenger had ducked, but not far enough.  And the driver— Well Jim could only pray she hadn’t had time to know what was coming before the car hit the trailer.
Unable to do anything for the people in the car, he grasped the man, still gripping the door, by the arm and pulled him away to the side of the road. Not sure if he would fall down, Jim pushed him down to sit on the damp grass. He reckoned a wet arse would be the least of the man’s worries right now.
