Sweet Saturday Sample 23-02-13

Time for Sweet Saturday Sample again, and this week I'm continuing in His Chosen Bride, from where I left off a couple of week's ago.

Not only do you get Henri's reaaction to the King's edict, but you will meet/become reacquainted with his youngest brother, Liam and his wife Melanie from From Now Until Forever, book one of The Gasquet Princes series.
I appreciate your company and would love your feedback. :-)

Feeling like a recalcitrant four-year-old, Henri recognised that tone of voice now and sighed. A lenient parent in most things, there were times when his father’s tone brooked no argument. This was one of them, Henri acknowledged.
“What am I supposed to do?” For the life of him, he failed to conceal his sarcasm. “Twiddle my thumbs? And for how long?”
“Until I say otherwise.” A beam of sunlight transformed the king’s thatch of grey hair to silver. His eyes conveyed simultaneous messages of understanding and determination. He rose and rounded his desk. Resting his hand on Henri’s shoulder, his tone gentled. “Get away, right away, and relax. Do you suppose I’ve found it easy to watch you running yourself into the ground in your efforts to combine your schedule with mine? And now—? Now,” he paused, waiting for a reaction Henri swallowed before continuing. “Now it is time for me to take up the reins again.
"The plane is waiting to take you to Scotland. Melanie and Liam hope you will remain with them for a couple of months at least, until you are fully rested."
As you can imagine, Henri is not pleased with the outcome of his interview with his father.

Sweet Saturday Sample

Following on from last week's Sweet Saturady Sample, I'm sharing another from my 2nd book in the Gasquet Princes series, and a Valentine novella, His Chosen Bride.  Last week you met my heroine, Monica.  This week, Henri, my hero receives some shocking news.

~ ~ ~ ~

December 19th

Henri Pierre Gasquet hesitated before knocking on his father’s office door. They’d shared breakfast together less than an hour ago and talked over many things, including Henri’s killer schedule for the next several months. The king had given no indication of the need for a formal meeting this morning. With a fatalistic shrug, Henri knocked, hesitated a second, then turned the handle and entered the room.

“You wanted to see me?” he waited for his father to indicate he should sit before dropping into the chair in front of the king’s desk.

“I have not been unaware of the burden you have carried since my heart attack a year ago.” Shocked, Henri watched as the king flipped through the pages of his diary and sighed before stopping at today’s entries. He pointed to the itemised list, cast Henri what looked like a disappointed stare and turned it round for Henri to read the list of his appointments on the page displayed. Who’d passed his diary to his father?

“Combining your own commitments with those you took over while I recuperated would have felled a lesser man.” The king’s voice hardened.

Feeling the heat burn his cheeks, Henri shifted in his chair. The past twelve months had been tough, and for the last six, his advisors almost competed with each other in counselling him to slow down unless he wanted to occupy his father’s hospital bed.

“I am also aware you have ignored all advice to cut back. So I am decreeing that as of this moment you are on indeterminate leave of absence.”

His Chosen Bride
(published Astraea Press)
is the second book in the
Gasquet Princes series.
Blurb:
Prince Henri Gasquet is happy to let his father, the king, choose his bride for him until he meets Monica Latimer.
Monica Latimer is not prepared to risk letting any man close enough to learn about her Gift. A gift that normally has men running for the hills when they find out about it.

Excerpt:
She lost track of time until the flames caught her attention once more. They flickered from orange to gold, to silver, to white.

A flurry of snowflakes masked the flames and for a second Monica watched the most beautiful, pristine snow-scene she’d ever seen. Her lips curved in longing. How she’d love to get a toboggan and slide down that slope. She knew where it was, and had done just that many times in her childhood, first with her parents and then, in clandestine manner, with her brother. Sneaking an old tin tray from the back of her mother’s walk-in pantry, she’d then grabbed Billy’s hand and they’d rushed out the back gate, heading for the lakeside track that led up into the hills.

Darkness, dense and thick with grief dropped over the scene. Startled and disconcerted by the strength of emotion emanating from the vision Monica shifted to her knees, ready to stand, when a voice, a deep male voice, sharp with fear called out her name.

“Monica!”

She knew she’d never heard the voice before, and yet—it was as familiar to her as the image she saw in her mirror each morning.

Help me, Monica.”

Desperate for more clues, she searched the darkness within the flames until it sputtered and faded. With a curse she jumped up and ran for the phone. With her outstretched hand hovering over it she halted and let her hand drop to her side once more. What could she say? What would the police or rescue team think of her if she called them and told them she’d seen a vision of a man in distress?

They’d laugh in her face and classify her as a lunatic. Well, maybe not. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d contacted them with positive information but something—an instinctive gut reaction told her what she’d seen this time hadn’t happened yet.

Blurb:
For Prince Liam, families meant bad news, unwanted commitments, and the loss of his personal freedom. Love spawned white picket fences, slippers at the hearth with a wife and kids making demands, so why did those images disappear when he met Melanie Babcot?

Melanie Babcot fought hard to escape the horrors of her youth and vowed to remain single and free, so when paid to protect Prince Liam from insurgents why did her personal pledge fly out the window?

Excerpt:
Liam Fitzwilliam Gasquet stared in amazement at the blooming patch of red milliseconds before the pain exploded in his arm. Some trigger-happy idiot had fired in his direction. Indignation didn’t have time to take root before another bullet kicked the dust at his feet.

Not ‘trigger-happy’.

Intentional.

The rebels had found the fourth and youngest son of Jean-Phillipe Gasquet, ruler of the tiny kingdom adjacent to the Swiss border. When had they discovered his whereabouts?

With a reluctant sigh, he faced the truth of it. They hadn’t ‘found’ him at all. They’d followed him.

Sweet Saturday Samples

Sorry I have been mia so often recently and I hope to be more cnstant in the future. Today I am offering a sample from my current release, His Chosen Bride.  (Bk 2 in The Gasquet Princes series.)

“Miss Mon’ca!”

The sound of the child’s cry lent wings to Monica’s feet. She shot through the kitchen door, down the steps, and round the corner to the nearest paddock. She expected to see Rosie leading the child’s pony round the arena. Instead, the sight of the child clinging to the pony’s neck, his face hidden in the animal’s wind-blown mane, sent chills of fear down her spine.

Charlie-Boy, her neighbour’s three-year-old son, screamed again. “I wan’ Mon’ca!”

“What’s the matter, baby?” Keeping the fear from her voice, she reached up and let the child tumble down from the saddle into her arms.

“Tubby’s sick.”

“He is?”

Charlie nodded, his red-rimmed eyes large and fearful. “He nearly falled and I thought I was going to get squashed.”

“And what did Rosie do?”

“She’s not here anymore.” Charlie-Boy sniffed and wiped his nose with the back of his chubby little hand.

“Did she say where she was going?” Monica assumed the child had misunderstood and her volunteer had gone to the stables for something.

“Her ‘bell’ wang and she cried and ran to her car. I got fwightened. And Tubby tripped and I thought he was going to fall.”

The ‘bell’ Monica knew was Charlie-Boy’s name for a phone.

What people are saying about From Now Until Forever:-
03-12-11  J. Gunnar Grey "the mystery writer"
This is a taut romantic suspense thriller, well written and edited. If you enjoy a fast-paced, sweet suspense story, then I strongly recommend it....Author Sherry Gloag allows no fluff in this novella, nor does she pander to lazy readers: if you want to keep up with her fast pace, then pay attention and keep up.

Sizzlinghotbooks Review 08-01-12 From Now Until Forever received 4 hearts.

Assassinations, dangerous safe houses and royalty abound in From Now Until Forever! The fast paced story will leave you breathless while the romance takes your heart away!

What people are saying about His Chosen Bride:-
...Sherry Gloag’s story is one that picked me up and did not put me down until I finished it. Definitely a breath of fresh air.  I give this story 4 ¾ Sunflowers.

Tiffany rated it 4 stars

I really like Monica and her Gift she has to help others! How cool is that? I think pretty cool. I also like Henri and understand him having a hard time being force to take a break and wanting to blame someone. I liked the tension between Henri and Monica. I did feel that Henri was a bit fickle with his feelings. But he seemed to work that out in the end. I sure hope that Ms. Gloag has plans to write the Henri's younger twins stories. I felt she did a great job of setting that up toward the end. This is a sweet romance so it does not have any swearing or sex. This was a fun read and I read it in one sitting. If you love romance and don't have tons of time then this may be the read for you.http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13519040-his-chosen-bride#other_reviews

and finally

http://www.greatmindsthinkaloud.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=romance&action=display&thread=1230
...The characters: Henri, Liam, Melanie, Monica, Simeon, and Sacha were simply wonderful. I enjoyed how the author was able to get this story all together quickly and very smoothly. In the end will Henri and Monica  be able to get together? What does the future hold for them?

I found "His Chosen Bride" a very delightful read and if you are in for a  good romance this read is for you. This novel was one that I could not put down until I was finished.

A-Z Challenge Day 12 'L'

L is for... emotion!!!

as in Love, Lust, Loneliness, & Laughter

LOVE
Take away love, and our earth is a tomb."  Robert Browning

"Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two."
Louis de Bernieres

"You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly."   Sam Keen

Marquis De Sade

LONELINESS
"Only in a house where one has learnt to be lonely does one have this solicitude for things. One's relation to them, the daily seeing or touching, begins to become love, and to lay one open to pain." Elizabeth Bowen

"A lonely man is a lonesome thing, a stone, a bone, a stick, a receptacle for Gilbey's gin, a stooped figure sitting at the edge of a hotel bed, heaving copious sighs like the autumn wind." John Cheever

"In our extreme youth, in our most humiliating sorrow, we think we are alone. When we are older we find that others have suffered too." Suzanne Moarny

"To most people loneliness is a doom. Yet loneliness is the very thing which God has chosen to be one of the schools of training for His very own. It is the fire that sheds the dross and reveals the gold." Bernard M. Martin

LAUGHTER
"The sound of laughter has always seemed to me the most civilized music in the universe." Peter Ustinov

"Laughter -- An interior convulsion, producing a distortion of the features and accompanied by inarticulate noises. It is infectious and, though intermittent, incurable." Ambrose Gwinett Bierce

"Close friends contribute to our personal growth. They also contribute to our personal pleasure, making the music sound sweeter, the wine taste richer, the laughter ring louder because they are there." Judith Viorst

Six Sentence Sunday

Where has the week gone?  Here's another six sentences, from my my latest release, His Chosen Bride, for this week's SSS.
Thanks to everyone who passes by and to those who leave me comments.  I appreciate you all

Normally quiet-spoken, the snap in her voice startled him to immobility.

She stood back while he hefted the bale onto the high stack against the wall, and stuffed her hands into her jeans pockets. Judging from the glittering anger in her eyes, he reckoned she’d done that to prevent her fists from connecting with his chin.

Not just anger burning in her eyes, he decided, and gave in to his need to touch. He reached out, skimmed a knuckle down her cheek, and let his hand drift round to the back of her neck. His thumb traced the racing pulse at the base of her throat. So the lady was not as cool as she’d have him believe.

The Gasquet Princes ~ Book 2
It didn’t take Henri long to pick up Liam’s eagerness to share and explain his enthusiasm for the farm and training the horses used to help disabled children. He supposed that at some time he’d heard of such things, but as he watched Melanie, and occasionally Monica, working with them, their joy transmitted itself to him.

Several volunteers gave their time to the charity, but it was watching Monica working with the children that soothed his soul and taught him there was far more to life than the meetings, duty, and ceremonies he’d immersed himself in so far.

The children loved her. And she reciprocated the emotion. It flowed around the arena when she worked, echoed in the children’s laughter each time they achieved a new goal.

Sweet Saturday Sample

Thanks to everyone who visits me on Sweet Saturday Samples and I truly appreciate your comments.
After diverting further into the story to give you a real Valentine smaple last week, I am hopping back to Henri's reappraisal of his enforced holiday at his brother and sister-in-law's riding school for disabled children.

The simplicity of Christmas at the farm had appealed to Henri. The joy of seeing it through the eyes of his three-month-old nephew, Jonathan, intrigued him, and brought a new magic and meaning to the day. Yes, they’d exchanged presents and stuffed themselves motionless with the awesome food Melanie prepared. It was, he knew, a Christmas that would ever remain as one of his most precious memories.

He’d expected to chafe at the lack of a filled schedule. Had wondered what he’d do with himself during this enforced period of inactivity, and laughed at the absurdity.

True, for the first few days, the disruption of his life, coupled with the re-entry of Monica into his orbit, stoked both his fury and sense of disconnection. Used to a life of routine with every moment accounted for, it took several days to acclimatise to the rhythm of the farm.

The sight of his brother’s joy filled him with an unknown sense of yearning he couldn’t identify. Heck, his life was all mapped out for him. One day he’d step into his father’s shoes, marry the woman his parents chose for him, sire the required heir and a spare, and—

His steps faltered, and he reflected back over the last few weeks, since his arrival.

To celebrate Valentine's Day on Tuesday, I am again sharing more from of my Valentine Story, His Chosen Bride, coming soon from Astraea Press, about Henri Gasquet, hero in the second story of four about the Gasquet Princes.

Today's six follows right on from yesterday's offering...

Her hands moved from Henri’s hair to roam over his back; raking, pulling, pushing. Emotions she never suspected herself capable of coursed through her. While Henri’s lips moved from her throat to the swell of her breasts, her hand began tugging his shirt free.

Something changed. Cool wind blew over heated skin, Henri’s hands dropped away, fisted and disappeared into his pockets. And so far he’d not spoken one single word.

Sweet Saturday Sample

11th Feb
Thanks to everyone who visits me on Sweet Saturday Samples and I truly appreciate your comments.
Today is special because I got my cover pic yesterday and  I get to sharewith with you all today.

Every final touch she’d put into this year’s Valentine dance was prompted by her love for Henri, and the man hadn’t had the decency to turn up.

“Yes, he has.” Sacha laughed.

“What?” Bewildered Monica missed a step as she tried to make sense of her partner’s words.

“He’s turned up.” Sacha swung her round and there, framed by the open doorway was Henri, his eyes searching the room. Obviously she’d spoken her thoughts aloud, and she blushed, wondering just how many of them she’d verbalised. One look at her dance partner’s face told her, more than she’d intended.

Before she knew what Sacha was up to, Monica found herself waltzed across the floor and standing in front of the man she loved.

Unaware of Sacha’s signal to the band she stepped into Henri’s arms and sighed when he pulled her firmly against his chest and began to dance. His heart was beating as fast as hers. The warmth of his breath fanned her hair away from her eyes, the smile she was sure lit her face started in her heart. If this was all she’d have of him, she’d treasure every millisecond of it so she could take it out and remember it in the future, long after Henri had returned to his own country and his royal duties.

The warmth of his hand on her back spelled safety. His arms cradled her, even while dancing. Her dislike of dance partners holding her so firmly normally shattered her nerves.

Not when in Henri’s arms. Not when he danced her out of the area and into the night.

Starlight replaced the overhead lights in the arena, and the sighing wind orchestrated the waving branches overhead.

And then everything vanished and the only thing in the world that mattered was Henri’s lips on hers. Feasting; demanding, taking.

She relished the feast, offered more, and gave wantonly. Whatever he offered this night, she’d accept, she promised herself.

Whatever.

His hands cupped her face angled it to better taste her. She opened for him and tasted the whiskey on his tongue. Smelled the woodsy cologne he favoured, and fisted her fingers in his hair to pull him closer.

With his free hand, he cupped the back of her head. The heat scorched through her hair and down her neck as his hand moved, followed by his lips. When he found the pulse point at the base of her throat she swore she heard bells ringing.

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day

Today I am sharing more from of my Valentine Story, coming soon, about Henri Gasquet, hero in His Chosen Bride.

“Do you remember that year when, after we came in from the first balcony appearance, we ran off and hid? They turned the whole palace upside down and involved everyone in the search. Of course, at that time we were too young to know or appreciate anything about the security threats from the insurgents then. To us it was just a bid for freedom from the monotony of routine on a day when we knew from the television other people had a really joyful time.

“Our parents even called in the air force to join the search.”
Melanie almost laughed aloud when Henri slanted a rueful grin in her direction.

Sweet Saturday Sample 28-1

I just want to thank everyone who visits me on Sweet Saturday Samples and to say how much I appreciate your comments.

This week I am sharing a sample from my Valentine story His Chosen Bride, to be released by Astraea Press.  When I wrote my current release, From Now Until Forever I didn't expect it to turn out to be the first of four stories about the Gasquet Princes, but then the characters 'insisted'!
His Chosen Bride is Prince Henri's story.

She lost track of time until the flames caught her attention once more. They flickered from orange to gold, to silver, to white.

A flurry of snowflakes masked the flames and for a second Monica watched the most beautiful, pristine snow-scene she’d ever seen. Her lips curved in longing. He planted his knuckles on his father’s desk and leaned forward. “I can’t just take off and leave them all in the lurch.” He pushed away.  “It is ridiculous for you or anyone else to expect me to walk away from my duties. Who would take my place?” he challenged, knowing every project mentioned needed his influence and prestige to press the projects forward.

“I will.”

“What!” Shock propelled Henri from his chair, and anxiety chased him round the room while he tried to remarshall his scattered thoughts. “I don’t have time to take leave of any kind,” he snapped. "This morning I am presiding over the ceremony to lay the new foundations for the bridge that will connect the west of our country more directly with the east.”

He tunnelled his fingers through his hair.

“This afternoon, I have a meeting with the backers about the funds for Melanie’s riding school for the disabled; and this evening I am giving a speech to the leaders of our financial sector.”
